Dear Friends of UofL,

We took advantage of an opportunity on Wednesday, appearing before the Kentucky legislature’s Health and Welfare Committee to give an overview and answer questions about the proposed merger of three hospital entities.  The meeting was very productive and provided an opportunity for us to share the real story of our proposed merger.  Along with the partners from Catholic Health Initiatives, Saint Joseph Health System, Jewish Hospital and St. Mary’s HealthCare and University of Louisville Hospital, we explained:

• How the merger will improve and expand health care for the citizens of Kentucky
• The $320 million economic benefit of the merger and how it will assure that University and Jewish Hospitals will have the financial means to continue and expand their care
• How the University of Louisville’s academic and medical research mission will be expanded and academic freedom unaffected by the merger
• The truth regarding the health care services that will continue to be provided once the merger is finalized, dispelling myths and misinformation that has surrounded the merger

As was stated in the meeting, negotiations are ongoing to find another facility in which University of Louisville physicians will perform tubal ligations since that procedure will no longer be performed at University Hospital.  We hope to have these negotiations finalized soon.
