I am pleased to announce that the 2017-2018 Mary Churchill Humphrey Centenary Memorial Scholarship was awarded on Friday, April 7. This scholarship, funded by a College of Arts and Sciences endowment, is awarded to a graduating senior or recent alumna of A&S and helps to support a year of graduate study in the United Kingdom.

The scholarship committee interviewed a competitive trio of applicants this year, each of whom submitted an essay synthesizing the candidate’s background, career goals, and proposed program and course of study. This application is unique in requiring a 20-page research sample demonstrating the applicant’s scholarly promise. In addition to these application elements, each of our candidates received exceptional faculty recommendations.

The scholarship has been awarded to Kara Stivers, a December 2015 Honors graduate with summa cum laude degrees in Political Science and History and a minor in Russian. The MCH scholarship will help support Ms. Stivers’ graduate study at the University of Oxford, where she has been accepted to pursue an MPhil in Russian and East European Studies. She was nominated for this award by Dr. Charles Ziegler, Dr. David Buckley, and Dr. Kristopher Grady.

The other finalists interviewed were: Christian Brawner, who earned a B.A. from UofL in Anthropology with an MEIS minor in May 2016, and is currently a Fulbright ETA in Jordan. Mr. Brawner has been accepted to Trinity College Dublin for the MSc in Comparative Social Change. Chloe Zoeller received her B.A. at UofL in Political Science and Spanish in May 2016, and recently returned from teaching in Colombia as a Fulbright ETA. She plans to pursue an MSc in International Relations at the London School of Economics.

2016 Humphrey Scholarship Winner - Rosslyn Steinmetz

UofL alumna Rosslyn Steinmetz has received the Mary Churchill Humphrey Scholarship. The prize is awarded by the College of Arts and Sciences. Steinmetz will use the award to pursue a master’s degree in Gender Research at the London School of Economics and Political Science, London, England. For her dissertation, she hopes to return to Paraguay to study the campaign for gender parity in politics. Steinmetz spent time in Paraguay in 2013 when she was a Fulbright study/research award recipient.

“Receiving the Mary Churchill Humphrey Award is significant beyond the tremendous assistance the funds provide because it is granted by the College of Arts and Sciences. I am proud to have the support of the University of Louisville as I continue my education."
