Dean Chris Doane

Christopher Doane is Professor of Music and Dean of the School of Music at the University of Louisville, a position he was appointed to in the summer of 2002. Prior to this Dr. Doane served as Coordinator of Performing Arts (2001-02) and Director of the School of Music at the University of South Florida (1995-2002) where he served in a variety of instructional and administrative capacities for a period of twenty years. Dr. Doane held previous appointments at Case Western Reserve University as Director of Bands and The Ohio State University as graduate teaching assistant. His academic degrees include the BME and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University (1974 and 1981) and the Master of Music degree from the University of Akron (1980).

In Louisville, Dr. Doane is a member of the Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the Louisville Orchestra and Louisville Public Media and board member of the Louisville Ballet, Musica Toscana, and the Friends of the School of Music.  He is a senior program evaluator and consultant / presenter for the National Association of Schools of Music and is an elected member of the Commission on Accreditation of NASM. 

Publications authored by Christopher Doane have appeared in Research Perspectives in Music Education, Update - Applications of Research in Music Education, Triad, Florida Music Director, Contributions to Music Education, Dialogue in Instrumental Music Education, The Instrumentalist, The Brass Band Bridge, The Brass Player, and the College Band Directors National Association Journal. Additionally, he contributed a chapter on assessment to the MENC publication Music at the Middle Level: Building Strong Programs and produced a ten-volume series of instructional videotapes dealing with techniques of teaching and performance on wind and percussion instruments. Dr. Doane is a two-time recipient of undergraduate teaching awards at the University of South Florida (1991 and 1995) and in 1998 was honored as the College Music Educator of the Year by the Florida Music Educators Association. He is the founding editor of the journal, Research Perspectives in Music Education, a position that he held for nine years.
