Girl Scouts
For Scouts who have completed their virtual journey in A Field Trip to the Moon, below are many ways you and your troop can complete your lunar mission after the show!
Design a Lunar Base with your Troop!
This activity satisfies requirement 7- Time for the Moon- for the Junior Girl Scout badge Sky Search.
This activity satisfies requirement 3-Ready, Set, Jet!- for the Brownie Girl Scout try-it Space Explorer.
The show ends with a landing on the Moon. Viewers can continue their lunar exploration with activities that investigate the Moon's habitability and sustainable resources. These activities culminate with plans for the design and creation of a lunar station. Get the complete activity guide [PDF]. For more information, please visit http://education.amnh.org/ftm.
Send us a photo of your troop's lunar base and we will post them here!
Observe the Moon

This activity satisfies requirement 2-The Moon!- for the Brownie Girl Scout try-it Space Explorer.
Print out a Moon Observation page [PDF] and start looking up! The best date to start observing the Moon is two days after a New Moon. The best time to make your observation is just after sunset. Stand facing South for your observations.
Explore the invisible with a UV Bead
Did you get a UV bead at a planetarium event or program? Below are some activities that you can do in light exploration!
Each UV detecting bead contains a special pigment, which will change color when exposed to ultraviolet light. UV light is the kind of light that causes you to get sunburn, so if your bead changes color, put on that sunscreen! Remember, your bead is not affected by visible light (what your eyes can see) and will remain white and colorless unless there is UV light shining on them.
What gives off UV light? Explore with your UV bead.
-Are there any lights in your home that give off UV light? Take your bead around and see if there are any light sources that will make them turn color. What about sunlight coming through windows? Remember, don’t look at the Sun directly!
-Take you bead outside on a sunny day and see what it does. Is it different in a shadow? What about on a cloudy day?
-Put it in a glass of water or take it to the pool with you, can UV light can go through water?
-Test out your favorite pair of sunglasses to see if they protect you from UV light.
