The Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium will provide a unique, advanced technology learning environment for visitors of all ages - P-12 and post-secondary students, teachers, families and the general public. The science hall will offer diverse programming that advances our understanding of astronomy, space science and the universe in which we live. Structural design elements are based upon a six-pointed star and ancient Stonehenge inspires the spectacular design of the facility. The entrance lobby will house interactive exhibits, a bright gift shop will offer science merchandise and mementos to visitors, and a semicircular classroom will provide instructional space for classes, workshops and teacher education programs. One hundred and sixty theater-style seats, under the 55-foot planetarium dome, will visually thrust viewers into the simulated starfield. Over 4000 stars will be projected from the Spitz 1024 projector manufactured by Spitz, Inc. of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. The Spitz Electric SkyTM ImmersaVisionTM Video Panorama system will project wide field, full-motion, full-color video images on the dome - visitors will be "wowed" as they are transported through the universe. The University of Louisville installation of the Spitz Electric SkyTM ImmersaVisionTM technology will by only the fourth such installation in the world when completed in 2000. The incorporation of three-dimensional computer modeled imagery, panoramic slide and video projection in concert with an advanced digital multi-channel sound system will combine to create a truly awesome virtual reality experience. The Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium has been made possible because of generous commitments from the Gheens Foundation, the Paul Ogle Foundation, the City of Louisville and Jefferson County Government, the University of Louisville, J.J.B. Hilliard, W.L. Lyons, Inc., Joyce Kirk, BellSouth, and an anonymous donor. Others have made gifts to dedicate a seat in the planetarium to their family or in memory of a loved one. However, as we continue to improve this exciting landmark in our community, it is important to note that additional contributions are needed. These contributions will ensure that our facility has the most advanced technological equipment available and that our investment in astronomy and space science education can be maintained and upgraded well into the future.
