Project ORION Milestones
Any large-scale project can be subdivided into smaller parcels, and
Project ORION is no exception, as the time line indicates. Because each of
those parcels is important both in itself and in relation to the overall
success of the project, members of the ORION teams and campus participants
will observe project "milestones" in a variety of ways over the long course of
implementation.
October-December 1997
-- Initiated public phase of the project with a kick-off luncheon for 300 project sponsors, team
members and campus community leaders
-- Identified two stages of the implementation, foundation and enrichment, to differentiate the
goals and objectives of the project's timeline
-- Established campus advisory committees
-- Implemented communications plan with WWW site and direct communication via team
minutes, campus-wide e-mail distributions, and individual e-mail Q&A through a PROFS service
account
-- Opened the project issues database for public review and comment via WWW to assure
systematic and open review of system issues
-- Began data administration discussions to standardize data coding structures across campus
-- Initiated workstation support team
-- Began and completed Scope phase 11/5-12/1
-- Began Business Process Prototyping using PeopleSoft Release 6.0, 12/1
-- Installed PeopleSoft Release 7.0
January-March 1998
-- Completed seventeen weeks of system prototyping for Human Resources and Student
Administration modules
-- Identified and began negotiating contract with the vendor for a new interactive voice response
(IVR)/Touchtone system
-- Examined data conversion and interface issues
-- Reviewed university-wide data administration and organized a group to oversee data integrity
-- Established a timeline and plan for student-administration data conversion from legacy systems
-- Initiated post-prototyping implementation planning process
April-June 1998
-- Completed initial prototyping for Human Resources and Student Administration modules
-- Completed transition to deployment (system specification and user testing)
-- Began system processing on SR70 server
-- Researched ancillary software support for e-mail and Web applications
-- Revised project implementation schedule to accommodate the Release 7.5 upgrade during the
first quarter of 1999
-- Continued data conversion and interface installation for implementation
--Installed and tested JetForm software for decentralized printing and forms design
--Developed specifications for personal data and demographic database conversions
--Implemented AutoSys (automated client/server job scheduling) and MQ series messaging
--Designed specifications and programming for payroll interfaces to financial systems
October-December 1999
--Developed large-scale conversion programs for transferring existing data to the new system
--Continued functional testing in all areas
--Course Catalogue module in production
--Admissions Pre-Application module in production
--Prepared for PeopleSoft version 7.5 release and installation, January 1999
January-March 1999
--Continued initial deployment specifications and user testing, data conversion
and interface installation for implementation
--Continued functional testing in all modules
--Met regularly with PeopleSoft and Cambridge Technology to oversee and
direct
upgrade strategy for PeopleSoft Version 7.5
--Installed Version 7.5 of the PeopleSoft system
--Installed and tested Version 7.5 database prepared at the PeopleSoft
upgrade lab
--Moved Undergraduate Admission Pre-Applicants and Course Catalog to Version
7.5 production
--Implemented Payroll for Version 7.5 production and began parallel testing
for first issue of ORION paychecks in May
--Completed implementation of Financial Aid 7.5
--Continued development of other modules in Version 7.5 for scheduled
implementation
--Completed requisition and negotiation process for interactive
voice-response/TouchTone
system to work with PeopleSoft
--Continued introductions to PeopleSoft system for academic and support
units
Activities for April-June 1999
--Continue planning, design and data conversion activities to prepare for system
implementation
--Complete and certify the results of the April payroll test run
--Begin ORION paycheck printing and distribution (biweekly 5/14; monthly 5/30)
and retire the current system
--Put Version 7.5 Financial Aid module into production
--Convert Admissions and Student Records data for current students
--Implement full Admissions processing
--Implement Spring 2000 Schedule of courses
--Install and implement IVR/Touch-tone system
--Continue campus-wide training program for functional users
--Continue to develop and test Web applications to reduce client workstation
requirements on campus and to permit WWW facilities for financial aid,
registration, personal information update, and human-resources
requirements
