History of the Club The late Barry Bingham, Sr., (1906-1988), former owner and publisher of The Courier-Journal and The Louisville Times, and founder of WHAS-TV, donated $4 million to the planned University Club and Alumni Center. Proceeds of $2.2 million from the sale of Gardencourt in Cherokee Park, which formerly housed the UofL Music School, helped to complete the project. The University Club was founded in 1991 to provide a place for University of Louisville faculty, staff, and alumni to meet on a social level and to share their mutual experiences. The Club boasts membership of approximately 1,750. The Club's direction and
strategic planning is overseen by a Board of Directors
elected by the Club members, and the day-to-day operations are administered by the
general manager, Mr. Bill
Rothballer.
