NEWSBREAK:
From the NYT of Sunday December 25:
"Professors'
Politics Draw Lawmakers Into the Fray. Inquiry on Liberal
Bias in Pennsylvania". This article by Michael
Janofsky describes student complaints leading to political
efforts to impose an "Academic Bill of Rights" to encourage
"free debate and protect students against discrimination for
expressing their political beliefs". Is this a real problem
or are those urging this program attempting to impose their
views on the classroom and the professors? We urge you to
read this important article:

A
MUST READ: "Academic Freedom and Tenure at
University of the Cumberlands , Kentucky
We urge each of you to reflect upon the article
"Academic Freedom and Tenure: University of the Cumberlands
(Kentucky)" that has just appeared in the March-April 2005 issue
of Academe:
http://www.aaup.org/com-a/institutions/cumberlands.htm
The article presents an extensive and devastating report by an
AAUP investigating committee on the dismissals / resignations of
Profs. Robert J. Day and James W. Bailey. The report
demonstrates the need for every university, college and academy
to have an active AAUP chapter. Such protects the faculty and
the administration. Please feel free to pass this information
along to your associates.

Your
Louisville AAUP Chapter Monitors Grievance Procedures at UofL.
Your UofL AAUP
chapter, upon request of a prime party to a grievance, will monitor the
grievance process. This privilege is granted in the UofL RedBook.
AAUP's concern is that fairness, adherence to process and that all
rights expected of academic institutions be accorded all parties. In
this capacity, AAUP remains a neutral observer endorsing neither
side of the grievance. If you wish to learn more, please contact
