Healthcare Leadership [competency-based education]

The University of Louisville is proud to introduce its first Competency-Based Education (CBE) program designed for experienced healthcare professionals who have some college credits or an associate degree and extensive work-knowledge, and are seeking to complete a bachelor’s degree in healthcare leadership.

So, what exactly is CBE and how does it work?

Defining “Competencies”

Competencies are typically defined as abilities, knowledge and skills that enable a person to do something successfully or efficiently and to act effectively in a job or situation within an organization.

According with the U.S. Department of Education, the Competency-Based Education model is a way of transforming learning from seat time to “a structure that creates flexibility and allows students to progress as they demonstrate mastery of academic content, regardless of time, place, or pace of learning. Competency-based strategies provide flexibility in the way that credit can be earned or awarded, and provide students with personalized learning opportunities.”

The CBE Model Counts Your Previous College Credits

Did life get in the way of your educational goals? Were you forced by circumstances to put your degree on hold? It happens… more than you think!

The CBE program at UofL recognizes that learning happens throughout life and that learning is for life. All those college credits you have acquired when you were motivated and able to pursue a higher education degree… they are not lost! Whether you started working on, or have earned an associate degree, or have an unfinished undergraduate degree, you can transfer more than 36 General Education credit hours to UofL from any regionally accredited institution. That can instantly put you well on track to completion of your bachelor’s at UofL.

The CBE Model Rewards Your On-the-Job Knowledge

You’ve been doing the work and gaining valuable experience, and you think your knowledge should count towards a degree. We agree!

The Competency-Based Education is an innovative learning method that focuses on what you already know and what you need to learn to be proficient on the job. This academic model allows you to capitalize on your existing knowledge and experience acquired on-the-job, and contributes new knowledge (concepts, strategies and practical applications) to the learning standards necessary to earn a bachelor’s degree.

The CBE program at UofL includes a Prior Learning Assessment course where you can earn up to 48 credit hours (tuition-free!) when you demonstrate the necessary work/life/training knowledge in your field. That’s more than a third of the entire degree, and you are getting even closer to reaching your end-goal!

The CBE Model Delivers the Knowledge You Need, For the Job You Want

Do you feel that you should only spend class time to acquire new knowledge rather than relearning concepts and theories you have already learned and applied during your career? Well, now you can do just that!

While traditional learning is measured by time spent in class regardless of whether you are learning or just repeating information, the CBE program capitalizes on our work/life/training knowledge through competency assessments for topics required in the program.

The remaining 36 hours (12 courses) in the Healthcare Leadership program at UofL are delivered within the competency-based learning format. Each course allows you to spend less time on knowledge you already have and more time on competencies you need to develop. You can demonstrate your knowledge in a specific topic and pass the assessment for the respective competency, saving you precious time to completion.

The CBE Model Tailors to Your Learning Style

Are you a fast learner? Are you a slow learner? You like taking your time or diving deep into certain concepts or applications? We know you are unique and we are taking the classroom out of the box for you!

The CBE program at UofL allows you to learn at your own pace, no matter how fast or slow you are, and to accommodate your personal learning style, ability and preference. You can learn from anywhere and at any time that is convenient for you, as your work and life demands.

The CBE program at UofL can be completed in as little as 3 intensive semesters or you can take much longer to master the competencies required for the completion of the degree.

The CBE Model Is Focused on Your Success!

You are perhaps anxious or even scared about returning to school and being a student again. Fear no more – We are behind and beside you, all the way!

Our expert team will accompany you in your journey, from start to finish. Our enrollment counselors, faculty and success coaches are dedicated to making your learning experience the best possible, through academic quality, efficient learning processes and any necessary tools or resources that can equip you to succeed in the program.

The CBE Model Delivers Learning That Is Tailored to Work/Life Balance

Are you unsure how you will be able to fit education into your life? Do you have even higher aspirations for your academic career? The CBE option can help you stick to the plan!

The Healthcare Leadership bachelor’s degree at UofL was developed to help you balance career goals and lifestyle. The program structure allows you to capitalize on existing knowledge and experience, while earning a bachelor’s degree at your own pace. With eleven flexible start dates throughout the year and courses 100% online, you can start when you’re ready and progress through the program as you are able.

Beyond the completion of your bachelor’s, the CBE program at UofL offers an ideal launch platform for further education within a graduate healthcare management program because our curriculum is based on the National Center for Healthcare Leadership (NCHL) competency model which has also been adopted by many top-tier MHA programs in the country.

If you are one of the many motivated professionals who can benefit from the CBE model, we hope you will join our program. We are now accepting applications and we look forward to welcoming you as a CBE student at UofL!
