Welcome to the University of Louisville! We are happy to walk you through the application process and admission requirements for the Bachelor of Social Work online program at UofL.

Based on previous academic career and college credits earned, applicants may enter either the BSW online program in the Lower Division or the Upper Division courses:

Applicants with 0-44 college credits

If you do not have previous college credit or have less than 44 credit hours, you may enter the Lower Division courses in the BSW program by applying to the University of Louisville.

To be admitted to the Lower Division, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Completed undergraduate application
    • $25 non-refundable application fee
  • Graduation from an accredited high school, GED or equivalent by petition (for example, home school education)
  • High school Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher
  • Completion of pre-college curriculum
  • Composite ACT score of 20 or higher

Applicants with 45+ college credits

If you have previous college credit of 45 hours or more, you may enter the Upper Division courses in the BSW program by applying to UofL and to Kent School of Social Work for the BSW online program. You may transfer up to 60 hours from a community college and up to 90 hours from a regionally accredited 4-year college.

To be admitted to the Upper Division, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Completed undergraduate application
    • $25 non-refundable application fee
  • College transcripts for a minimum of 45 credit hours
  • Cumulative college GPA of 2.5 or higher (required for admission in good standing)
  • Personal Statement
  • Resume
  • Two letters of recommendation

Applicants to the upper division BSW should become familiar with the application checklist for the Kent School of Social Work before submitting their application.

If you wish to enter the Drug and Alcohol Counseling track, you must indicate that on the application to the Upper Division. Submit a two page essay discussing your interest and past experience in the substance abuse field (if applicable), how you hope to contribute, and your plans after graduation. Essay specs include: 12-point font, double spaced, full name, UofL student ID and submission date in the header.

Application Deadlines for Lower and Upper Division

  • March 15: priority deadline
  • May 31: final deadline for Fall start

International Students

BSW applications submitted by U.S. citizens living abroad and international students are not being accepted at this time, except in rare circumstances when all of the following requirements are met:

  • No language barriers exist
  • A qualified practicum supervisor is readily available (e.g., the supervisor has a MSSW degree from a CSWE-accredited institution or similar CSWE-type accreditation)
  • UofL’s Kent School of Social Work has previously established partnerships with practicum sites and faculty liaisons

If you live outside of the United States and intend to complete an online academic program from your home country, follow the Application Checklist instructions to make sure the proper documents are submitted with your application.
