About Us

The University of Louisville (UofL) is a nationally-recognized research university located in Kentucky's largest metropolitan area. It was a municipally supported public institution for many decades prior to joining the university system in 1970. Currently, the university is funded by the state of Kentucky, and has three campuses across the Louisville metro area.

The online “campus” at the University of Louisville offers 40+ programs in various areas of study, designed for adult learners who want to earn a college degree or certificate while working full time or juggling other life priorities. Earning a degree online enables you to fit education into your busy schedule and help you achieve your personal and professional goals faster. Online programs are available through the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business, College of Education and Human Development, Kent School of Social Work, J.B. Speed School of Engineering, School of Nursing, and School of Public Health and Information Sciences.

The best part? A degree earned online at UofL is still a UofL degree. The name of the degree and the transcripts will not indicate whether the degree was completed online, on campus or through a combination of both methods.

UofL is proud to serve the active-duty service members and veterans, here at home and abroad. Our institution has received the Military-Friendly designation for ten consecutive years, demonstrating consistent commitment to service members and their transition from military life to student life. Visit our Military Students page to learn more about the special active-duty military tuition rate and other benefits.

The University of Louisville evaluates opportunities for authorization on a continuous basis in states where it is not currently authorized. Due to a number of factors and considerations, UofL cannot guarantee that authorization will be obtained for certain programs in a certain state. Please note if UofL is not authorized in a particular state, you are taking the following risks:

        • you may be unable to sit for local licensing in that state
        • you may be ineligible for consumer protection in that state
        • you may not be able to complete field placements (practicum, internship, etc.) in that state. This could impact licensure or recognition of the degree to meet particular requirements in that state.

Therefore, if you decide to enroll in any of the University of Louisville’s programs, please be aware that you are taking a risk that you may not be able to complete that program or use any of the credit earned in that program should you decide to pursue licensing in that field in that state. Please note that the risks listed above are not exhaustive. Please verify with your state’s professional licensing board that your plans are not impacted by these risks.

Are you planning on pursuing professional licensure in your field? If yes, we strongly encourage you to follow the steps below before enrolling in an online program at the University of Louisville:

        1. Determine if your program is available in your state or territory by reviewing the State Authorization Regulations tab. Students considering an academic program as a pathway to professional licensure or certification in any field should be aware that state reciprocity or authorization for distance education has no effect on professional licensing or certification requirements.
        2. Carefully review the "General Notification for All Students" section below on this page. This is applicable to all students regardless of your location or program.
        3. Select your program of interest from the list below.
        4. Carefully review the educational prerequisites for your program and intended state of licensure and whether our program meets those requirements for licensure. Use the contact information provided for your state licensing board to clarify or confirm any requirements.
        5. If questions remain after reviewing the information provided below, contact online@louisville.edu and we’ll do our best to connect you with the information you need. Although our team can provide initial guidance, it is ultimately your responsibility to continually check with the state licensing board where you intend to seek licensure to confirm all licensing requirements.
        6. Understand and consider the implications of the below information prior to enrolling in a program intended to lead to professional licensure.
        7. If your plans change (as to location, program, etc.), follow this process again to review the information on your new program or state.

        General Notification for All Students:

The University of Louisville strongly recommends that you inquire with your applicable licensing board to determine all of the educational and other requirements for licensure, before enrolling in the program. Other requirements may include, but are not limited to, additional post-graduation examinations or experience, application and licensing fees, criminal background checks, reference checks, fingerprint submissions, etc. To inquire as to other requirements, or ask any other questions regarding licensure, please contact the licensing board in your state by clicking on the link to the agency in the disclosures below.

Please note that licensure requirements are always subject to change. Although the University of Louisville will confirm the licensure requirements on a routine basis, we strongly recommend that you inquire with the state board to confirm that you understand and will meet the requirements for licensure before enrolling in your program of choice.

Additionally, you should note that licensing requirements vary by state and relocating could impact whether you will meet eligibility requirements for licensure. Check with the state licensing board where you desire licensure before relocating to ensure that you will be eligible for licensure or reciprocity.

The University of Louisville is currently working to confirm the state-specific prerequisites for licensure as a structural engineer in all states and U.S. jurisdictions. If you are interested in pursuing licensure as a Professional Engineer or Structural Engineer, the University of Louisville strongly recommends that you inquire with your applicable licensing board to determine all of the educational and other requirements for licensure before enrolling in the program. Other requirements may include, but are not limited to, additional post-graduation examinations or experience, application and licensing fees, criminal background checks, reference checks, fingerprint submissions, etc. Contact information for your state licensing board can be found here: http://ncees.org/licensing-boards
