Overview

In the Bachelor of Science in Justice Administration program, the following core competencies are extended across the curriculum and emphasized to a different degree in each course.

  • A working knowledge of the entire criminal justice process (adult and juvenile) and the issues surrounding each portion of the process
  • Proficiency in both written and oral communication
  • Skills for identifying, retrieving, and analyzing electronic information
  • Ability to make linkage between theory and policy development in the criminal justice system
  • Knowledge of principles of organizational administration as they apply to the management of criminal justice agencies (adult and juvenile)
  • Ability to understand, identify, and apply legal issues relative to the criminal justice system (adult and juvenile)

This Justice Administration program prepares the student for a wide variety of career opportunities in both the public and private sector, such as:

For those already employed in the criminal justice system, a bachelor's degree can increase on-the-job performance and promotion opportunities. It also forms a basis for further study with the Master of Science in Justice Administration program (also available online) or another graduate program such as a law degree.

Faculty

The foundation of this educational program is a committed and active faculty. Due to the expertise of the faculty, a number of partnerships have been developed between the Department of Justice Administration and national, state, and local criminal justice agencies. Through these partnerships, faculty provide timely and essential research, service and advisement on current issues within criminal justice. This active practical involvement serves to enhance the relevance of classroom instruction and the currency of educational material offered by the program.

Faculty are currently actively involved with the U.S. Department of Justice in the development of an F.B.I. Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory in addition to ongoing research with local, state and federal law enforcement and other criminal justice agencies.

Admission

UofL's online Bachelor degree programs are designed so that you complete the first two years of coursework - general education courses - online through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) with the Kentucky Virtual Campus (KYVC). Students who have been enrolled at a KCTCS school and have fulfilled all general education requirements can have them transferred in their entirety and may begin immediately with online upper level coursework at UofL.

Although UofL partners with KCTCS to provide online bachelor's degrees, you may transfer credit to UofL from any regionally accredited university to fulfill general education requirements. Every situation is different. If you have questions about how your credit will transfer, contact an online learning consultant.


Students ready to apply for admission to UofL will need to:

  • Submit an undergraduate application and pay the $50 non-refundable application fee
  • Submit all official college transcripts to the Office of Admissions
