Community Drug Toss - A Success!
April 15, 2011 - Nursing and public health students, along with other volunteers at UofL helped with the recent community-wide drug toss.
Over 500 vehicles drove through Papa John's Cardinal Stadium Saturday, April 9 to drop off unwanted or expired medications. Police collected more than 620 medications at the site.
In addition to Papa John's, J.B. Atkinson Elementary and 1st Gethsemane Baptist Church served as two other drop-off locations. About 121 medications were collected at those sites, with about 60 vehicles passing through.
The total vehicle count for the day was 573, with 744 medications collected.
School of Public Health and Information Sciences students, School of Nursing students, members of UofL’s Building Resiliency In Campus and Community (BRICC) Coalition, First Gethsemane Baptist Church, 7th Street Corridor PAL Coalition and Portland Now Prevention Partnership all partnered in the effort.
This event took place during National Public Health Week, underscoring the need for safe and legal disposal of unwanted or expired medications.
