Dr. Schirmer joined the UofL School of Nursing after extensive clinical practice in psychiatric-mental health nursing, treating a variety of mental disorders. Prior to her nursing career, Schirmer worked as a therapist with children, adolescents, and their families. As a PMHNP, Schirmer has experience working with interdisciplinary care teams to treat children, adolescents, and adults in community mental health and private practice settings. Prior to her current role, Schirmer worked with vulnerable populations within a federally qualified healthcare clinic, which included work with court-involved patients with dual diagnoses.

Schirmer currently specializes in treating patients diagnosed with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and eating disorders and conditions commonly comorbid such as unipolar depression, bipolar disorder, trichotillomania, generalized and social anxiety, panic disorder, PTSD, ADHD, and substance use disorders. Governor Andy Beshear recently appointed Schirmer to the newly formed Kentucky Eating Disorder Council.

Schirmer also has been working to develop Kentucky Nurses Helping Nurses, a collaborative program with the Kentucky Nurses Association and International Society of Psychiatric Nurses designed to meet the mental health needs of and promote wellness for Kentucky nurses as they care for us during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Schirmer teaches undergraduate psychiatric-mental health clinical groups in the BSN Louisville program and in the PMH track of the DNP Program.
