Dr. Christian is a Distinguished Scholar and Fellow in the interprofessional National Academies of Practice and a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Dr. Christian received her BSN and MSN (Family-Child Nursing) from The University of Missouri-Columbia, and PhD in Nursing from The University of Texas at Austin. As a nurse scientist and scholar guided by her clinical expertise in pediatric nursing, Dr. Christian’s program of research is focused on children and adolescents with chronic illness – the interplay among physiologic, functional, psychosocial, and development characteristics as children integrate chronic illness into their everyday lives, and exploring how families adapt to and manage their child’s chronic condition and/or physical disability (R01- Building Life Skills in Children with Cystic Fibrosis; R01-NR04576, NINR, NIH).

Throughout her academic nursing career, Dr. Christian’s goal has been to educate and mentor students by helping them make linkages between theory, research, and practice, as well as health policy. Dr. Christian’s professional service has been highlighted by an emphasis on research mentorship in teaching and guiding students across all levels (PhD, DNP, MSN, and BSN), as well as mentoring faculty in research grant proposal development and scholarship, for which she received several research mentorship awards. As a junior faculty member, Dr. Christian received the Texas Excellence – University Teaching Award at The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Christian has extensive experience teaching research methods and mentoring nurses in dissertation research and evidence-based practice scholarly projects and translational research.

Dr. Christian’s philosophy of servant leadership has been demonstrated through her administrative service as Department Chair at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), School of Nursing (2 years) and at the University of Utah, School of Nursing (5.5 years), providing mentorship and coaching of faculty, while guiding their professional development. Dr. Christian serves on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Pediatric Nursing writing a monthly synthesis of translational research and evidence-based practice (6 years). She regularly reviews for scholarly journals including Nursing Research, Qualitative Health Research, Journal of Pediatric Nursing, Journal of Specialists in Pediatric Nursing, Pediatrics, Journal of Interprofessional Education and Practice, Social Work and Health Care, Sleep Health, and Journal of Translational Medicine. Dr. Christian has served on research grant review panels for NIH (NINR; Social Sciences and Population Studies Integrated Review Group), Tri-Service Military Nursing Research, American Nurses Foundation (1st and 2nd level review panels), Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS), and Society of Pediatric Nurses. Dr. Christian has provided research abstract reviews for the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science (CANS) National State of the Science Congress on Nursing Research, Tri-Service Military Nursing Research, Society of Pediatric Nurses, Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS), Western Institute of Nursing (WIN), Research! Louisville, and UAB Minority Health Research Center. Dr. Christian served as Chair of the University of Utah Research Committee, University of Utah College of Nursing Research Committee, and the Research Committee Gamma Rho Chapter– Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.
