DEPT PORTAL | SFAO PORTAL

Students are encouraged to browse the pages under each menu of this website to gain a greater understanding of the financial aid process and become familiar with resource information that is available to provide clarification and find answers to questions with delay for a phone call, email, or office visit.

Specific questions about balances owed, payment plans, and residual funds are typically managed by the Bursar’s Office. Students are encouraged to visit the Bursar’s Office website www.louisville.edu/bursar, as well, for more information about these topics and their contact information.

The 2024-2025 FAFSA is now available!

If you have not already done so, you are encouraged to file the 2024-2025 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible, in order to maximize your federal, state, and institutional financial aid eligibility.

Please remember the FAFSA form is free, and you should not pay to fill it out. Only go to the U.S. Department of Education's Federal Student Aid website to file the 2024-2025 FAFSA. If a website asks you to pay to fill it out, you are not dealing with the official FAFSA site.

After you have successfully completed the 2024-2025 FAFSA, you should receive a confirmation email from the U.S. Department of Education. Unfortunately, schools and states will not receive students’ FAFSA data from the U.S. Department of Education until the first half of March at the earliest.  We will begin sending email confirmations to students as soon as possible after UofL has received their FAFSA data, along with any additional next steps to take.

Resources and tips for successfully completing the 2024-2025 FAFSA:

  • Review the Pro Tips for the 2024–2025 FAFSA form and stay up-to-date with announcements and FAFSA help information released by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Be sure to include “University of Louisville” and our school code (001999) as one of your school choices on your FAFSA.
  • Review the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority’s (KHEAA’s) FAFSA Completion Guide and FAFSA Walkthrough video.
  • To check the status of your 2024–2025 FAFSA, log in to your StudentAid.gov account. You can find your application status in the ‘Status Center’ under ‘My Activity,’ which displays after you log in if you have already started or completed a FAFSA form.

 Having issues submitting your FAFSA?

  • Until we have received your FAFSA from the U.S. Department of Education, you will likely need to contact the U.S. Department of Education for help depending on your questions and/or issues. Please view the 2024-2025 FAFSA Help resource for additional assistance and support contact information.
  • Please feel free to also contact our office by e-mail at finaid@louisville.edu or by phone at 502-852-5511; we are here to support you.

Anticipated timeframe of 2024-2025 FAFSA processing and aid eligibility review:

  • Working under the assumption your FAFSA data is received by the U.S. Department of Education by mid-March at the earliest, we are committed to sharing financial aid information, such as receipt of your FAFSA data, as soon as possible.
  • For our new and transfer undergraduate student populations (summer/fall 2024 admitted new/transfer students), we anticipate sending financial aid offers to students eligible to be evaluated for federal financial aid within 3-4 weeks of receiving their FAFSA data. If there are further delays, we will update this timeline.
  • For our continuing undergraduate, graduate, medical, dental, law, and readmitted undergraduate students, we do NOT expect a delay to the financial aid offer timeframe. Aid eligibility evaluations for these student populations should occur in late-May/early-June. If there are further delays, we will update this timeline.

Visit UofL’s 2024-2025 FAFSA Simplification Act website for additional information on how the application process is changing.

Federal Student Loan Repayment for Graduated Students

The national COVID-19 emergency ended on May 11, 2023, and Congress recently passed a law preventing further extensions of the payment pause. Student loan interest will resume on September 1, 2023, and borrowers will have to restart payments in October. The U.S. Department of Education will notify borrowers before payments restart. Loan servicers should also provide borrowers with billing statements or notices at least 21 days before their first payments are due.

Borrowers who graduated during the COVID-19 emergency should pay special attention to the restart of federal loan payments, as they have not been required to make payments on their federal loans before but will be required begin making payments soon.

For more detailed information about loan repayments resuming and frequently asked questions about debt relief visit the U.S. Department of Education’s website.

Beware of Scams: You might be contacted by a company saying they will help you get loan discharge, forgiveness, cancellation, or debt relief for a fee. You never have to pay for help with your federal student aid. Make sure you work only with the U.S. Department of Education, the office of Federal Student Aid, and your assigned loan servicers.

For more detailed information about loan repayments resuming and frequently asked questions about debt relief visit the U.S. Department of Education’s website.
