Physical Security and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Assessments

Security threats, vulnerabilities and exposures impact every organization today by creating risks that must be controlled and managed. Research indicates that if you know the security risks you are facing and take action to manage them, you may have a significant advantage in helping to prevent crime at your facility.

NCPI wants to assist you in achieving this advantage by identifying your vulnerabilities through Physical Security and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) Assessments.

Security assessments obtain answers to questions such as these:

  • What is to be protected?
  • What are the vulnerabilities of what is to be protected?
  • Who has access to sensitive areas?
  • What emergency plans are in place for your facility?
  • What measures can be taken to achieve the desired level of protection?

Physical Security and CPTED Assessments are used to define security requirements for the design of new buildings or for the retrofit of existing facilities. Although the scope and level of each assessment varies, its goal remains the same--to determine the acceptable level of security protection for a given facility.

We at NCPI value your needs, so we offer our Physical Security and CPTED Assessments separately or together for a fully comprehensive security assessment. Below is a breakdown of the assessments for further clarification.

Physical Security Assessment

NCPI conducts Physical Security Assessments of businesses as well as educational institutions and takes into consideration tactical security procedures as well as practical applications.  Each member of our physical security assessment team is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP) through the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), to ensure that you receive a high-quality, accurate assessment of your location.

This assessment includes an evaluation of current physical security hardware, lighting and fencing, as well as access control, intrusion detection systems and video surveillance.  Our physical security team also conducts threat assessments of external exposures to burglary, robbery, assault and parking lot liability as well as a review of the emergency procedures of your facility. We will provide you with recommendations to increase your level of protection as well as your piece of mind.  At NCPI, we want to make certain that your security is adequate, cost effective and properly planned.

CPTED Assessment

CPTED Assessments are based on the concept that “The proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the fear of crime and the incidence of crime, and to an improvement in the quality of life.”   National Crime Prevention Institute

CPTED is an abstract concept that is sweeping the nation and having positive results.

Crime Prevention through Environmental Design Assessments go beyond deadbolts on doors and locks on windows. CPTED is drawing crime prevention measures into the blueprints of your building and landscaping or retro-fitting a pre-existing structure and landscape to reduce crime.

This is done by implementing the basic concepts of CPTED, which are:

  • Natural Access Control
  • Natural Surveillance
  • Territorial Reinforcement
  • Management and Maintenance
  • Legitimate Activity Support

A key component of utilizing a CPTED assessment to help secure your facility is that aesthetically pleasing designs are at the core of CPTED. An extra bonus is that many times applying these principles is relatively inexpensive.
