Synopsis
At a gala event, Helen Thomas reminisces on her life and career as a pioneering woman in the field of journalism.
VISIONS is an exciting program for young people interested in working together on the creation of a musical tribute honoring an inspirational person. Using a hands-on approach to creating original opera, students learn about opera along with other art forms like films and musicals that successfully combine music with words. Guided by theater, music, and playwriting consultants, as well as a resident supervising composer, students take the lead in generating a libretto (story) and the corresponding music. Research will be an important component of the workshop as students study the honoree's life while developing their script. This workshop is a remarkable opportunity for high school students to gain important life skills such as cooperation and compromise as they collaborate on an original creation. They will also gain a greater understanding of outstanding character traits that are demonstrated by an inspirational person--character traits that they may choose to emulate throughout their own lives.
Deadline for Application: June 1, 2005
