Ethos Statement

UofL Music Therapy ETHOS

The music therapy faculty and staff at the University of Louisville are guided by a professional ethos that is the sum of our abiding principles, core values, and highest aspirations. We enthusiastically welcome and encourage diversity of all forms in our community. We value the intersectionality of all individuals, appreciate the fluidity of identity and expression, and acknowledge the multiple components that contribute to one’s identity including race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, age, socioeconomic status, disability, religion, national origin, and military status.

As members of the music therapy department, faculty and students are expected to uphold:

  • A commitment to treating others with respect.
  • A commitment to embracing individual differences.
  • A commitment to open communication and honesty dialogue.
  • A commitment to standing up for each other’s equality.
  • A commitment to service, both on and off campus.

A commitment to contributing to a supportive and success-oriented culture.

By collectively upholding this ethos, we recognize this creates the ability for the UofL Music Therapy Department to achieve:

Excellence. We take pride in being inclusive of, and accepting of each person’s identity. We are cognizant of each person’s unique talents and support each other in the pursuit of scholarly achievement.

Strength. Drawing from each of our individual differences and experiences strengthens the whole. We are able to learn from each other and add to our interpersonal growth as we refine our therapeutic personae.

Teamwork. We stand beside one another in unity. Working together propels us toward a higher plane of accomplishing learning goals. Diversity and inclusion are imperative for compassionate and empathetic therapeutic service delivery.
