Jazz Week has been our flagship event for fourteen years. The true essence of Jazz Week has been to offer visiting students from throughout the region and our jazz studies students the opportunity to interact with jazz masters and leading jazz educators in concerts, clinics, workshops and adjudication. It has been an exciting event which we hope to make even more vital by condensing to a four day festival called Jazz Fest.
Joining Jazz Fest will an added concert schedule. The Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program will begin presenting leading jazz artists throughout the year and a Latin Festival in the spring. One could not ask for a more significant figure to begin our expanded program than Dave Brubeck and his fabulous quartet. Others on the Jazz Fest and more…. concert series will include: Sammy Figueroa and his Latin Jazz Explosion, Antonio Hart and Jazz Peru. Jazz Fest artists include: Byron Stripling, Dick Oatts, Open World Jazz Ensemble (Russia), Garage Sale (Argentina), John Goldsby, Jack Wilkins, Corey Christiansen and Michael Parkinson. Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program:
Serious About America’s Music - JAZZ!

The University of Louisville School of Music is pleased to be the home of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program. Established in 1985, the program was named for Mr. Aebersold in 2000. Mr. Aebersold, a recently retired faculty member, is one of the leading proponents of jazz education and largest publisher of jazz education materials in the world. Additionally, the School of Music has hosted the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops since 1977. The Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program is recognized throughout the nation and world for its commitment to quality and innovative programs.
The latest addition to our jazz degrees is a Bachelor of Music with an Emphasis in Jazz Performance. This degree will offer students a complete undergraduate jazz experience. Other jazz degrees offered at the School of Music include a Master’s degree in Performance with a Concentration in Jazz and a Bachelor of Arts degree with an Emphasis in Jazz Studies. A Bachelor of Arts degree with an Emphasis in Music Industry is also offered. Scholarship assistance is available for graduate and undergraduate students wishing to focus their study in jazz.
The program features extended residencies by leading jazz artists as well as a continuation of the exciting annual Jazz Week every February which features a week long celebration of jazz with concerts, workshops, and clinics. In its fourteenth year, Jazz Week is an event that regularly features some of the biggest names in the jazz world including Dave Brubeck Quartet, Elvin Jones Jazz Machine, McCoy Tyner Trio, Wynton Marsalis, Billy Taylor, Michael Brecker, Clark Terry, and Marian McPartland just to name a few of the recent guest artists. Jazz Week 2006 featured Jon Hendricks, Dave Liebman and Bill Watrous. Other artists who have appeared at the School of Music include Ahmad Jamal, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Roy Haynes Quartet, Slide Hampton, James Moody, Marcus Printup, Jerry Bergonzi, Bud Shank, Terell Stafford, Roland Vazquez Ensemble, Joe La Barbera, Eric Alexander, Kenny Werner Trio, Jeff Hamilton Trio, and Peter Erskine Trio.
The Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program is one of only a few prestigious institutions in the United States selected to participate in an international music exchange sponsored by the Open World Leadership Center at the Library of Congress; support for the Open World cultural program is also provided through partnership and funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Jazz Studies Program played host to three hand-selected groups of jazz musicians and jazz educators from throughout Russia. The goal was to afford these fine musicians and educators the opportunity to experience life in America with a special focus on jazz. In addition to home stays with area families, visiting local places of interest and witnessing our political process in action, their experience included taking lessons; participating in master classes; playing alongside our musicians in rehearsals, performance, jam and recording sessions; listening to jazz in a variety of venues and much more. In addition to UofL Jazz faculty, our guests worked with the Heath Brothers (Percy, Jimmy and Tootie), Jon Hendricks, David Baker, Jamey Aebersold, and pianist Harry Pickens to mention but a few.
Student and faculty groups, from a quintet to more than forty, have toured and performed in numerous foreign countries. These countries include Brazil, England, Estonia, Finland, Poland, Russia, and Wales. In addition to our continued interaction with Russian musicians, there is an exchange program currently in place with the Akademia Muzyczna in Katowice, Poland and ones being developed with institutions in Brazil and Australia.
The prestigious faculty includes Professor John LaBarbera, an alumnus of the Buddy Rich Band and a national figure among active jazz composers and arrangers, recently receiving a Grammy nomination for his recording On The Wild Side; saxophonist and Fulbright Senior Specialist Mike Tracy, who is Director of the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program, Professor of Music and the author of Jazz Piano Voicings for the Non-Pianist and co-author of Pocket Changes and Pocket Changes II; Associate Professor Jerry Tolson (saxophonist and vocalist), who performs regionally with three of his own professional groups including a big band and a contemporary jazz ensemble and is an active composer/arranger as well; and pianist/bassist Chris Fitzgerald, an extraordinary performer, composer and educator. Trumpeter Anysn Banks will be joining our faculty in Fall 2006 as an Assistant Professor. Mr. Banks is a gifted instrumentalist and educator, currently completing his DMA in Trumpet Pedagogy at Indiana University. Additional faculty include Tyrone Wheeler, lecturer of jazz bass who is known for his work with numerous local and regional groups and can be heard on numerous Jamey Aebersold Play-Along CDs; pianist Jim Connerley, an outstanding performer and educator; Craig Wagner, a fantastic guitarist who is at home playing contemporary and traditional jazz styles; and drummer Jason Tiemann, an exceptional performer with extensive teaching experience. In addition, each of the faculty are active regionally, nationally and internationally as educators, adjudicators and performers in such recognized at workshops as the Skidmore Jazz Institute and the Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops.

The University of Louisville School of Music's Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program is pleased to announce a new educational offering Jazz in the Schools.
The Jazz in the Schools program introduces students to the art of improvisation through the performance of America's own original music, jazz. Currently a pilot program with a target of ten middle school performances occurring during the fall of 2002, our goal is to establish a program which will be available to every school in the Louisville area, reaching students of all ages and backgrounds.
