International Brass Chamber Music Festival
University of Louisville School of Music

October 11th through 14th, 2008

The festival will host three top ranking brass ensembles. International Trumpet Guild Journal calls Spanish Brass "one of the most exciting and artistic brass quintets to come on the scene in recent years... a gloriously brilliant performance." Diane Wright with The Herald in Everett, Washington says of Proteus 7 that "these young musicians have an ease of playing and a genuine respect that makes you realize how vital it is for young people to see such groups." Gary Barrow of the ITG Journal writes of Sonus Brass, "sounds as tight as any brass quintet around!…consistently strong performances and energetic spirit…an exemplar in the fundamentals of quality ensemble playing."

All three of these ensembles will be providing workshops as well as concerts.

Julia Shinnick (Music History Division) delivered a paper at the international conference of the Colloquium on Violence and Religion at the University of California, Riverside (June 18-22, 2008). This year’s conference had as its topic, Catastrophe and Conversion: Political Thinking for the New Millennium. Shinnick spoke on the text and music of the medieval Song of the Sibyl, a piece whose Latin text dates from c. 425 C.E. and whose musical settings and performances span more than 1000 years- from the 10th to the 21st century.
