International Student Admissions Checklist

In order to be considered for admission into the U of L School of Music, prospective international students must:

Submit the following to Graduate Admissions Processing

  • a completed application for admission, including the $50 application fee (there is no additional application or fee for admission to the School of Music).  Applications received without payment will be canceled.
  • official/notarized translated copies of all college transcripts or grade records.  If you attended college outside the United States, you must submit verbatim notarized English translations of your records.  If the documents are not in English, submit a copy of your records to the following address for a course-by-course detailed report.

Educational Credential Evaluators, Inc.
       P.O. Box 92970
       Milwaukee, WI 5320
See www.ece.org for more information.

If English is not your native language, you must verify your English proficiency by submitting OFFICIAL, satisfactory scores (550 or higher for paper-based test or 210 or higher for computer-based test) from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL – see www.toefl.org) or by successful completion of the advanced level of the Intensive English as a Second Language (IESL) program at UofL.  For more information, see the International Student Center Website at http://www.louisville.edu/provost/intcent/

  • If you are not a U.S. citizen but have immigrant status, you must submit a copy of your immigrant card (both sides).
  • official GRE (Graduate Record Exam) scores, if possible.  Music students have until the end of their first semester of enrollment to submit these scores if the GRE is not offered in their home country.
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation, from non-familial sources, detailing your music and academic accomplishments.

Send the following to the School of Music Admissions Office

  • a music audition performance, if you are applying for a performance or education degree.  If you are unable to audition in person, a tape or CD may be sent.
  • any writing or composition samples required for application to Music History or Theory/Composition degree programs.
  • to be considered for a music scholarship, submit a letter indicating interest in assistantships or service awards.

After you are admitted to the University, the International Student Center will issue the I-20 Visa.  If you are on a Visa that requires an I-20 or IAP-66, you will need to complete an International Financial Supplement Form and submit appropriate financial documentation such as bank statements and proof of financial assistance.  See the International Student Center website at http://www.louisville.edu/provost/intcent/ for more information.
