Week of August 28, 2009
Today's the deadline for:
- - CLASS ROSTERS: Applied faculty members are expected to print and deliver all class rosters to Naomi Oliphant.
- - COURSE SYLLABI: Every faculty member is expected to send an electronic version and also to provide a hard copy of every course syllabus to Naomi Oliphant. Please email them as well to Rob Amchin (raamch01@louisville.edu) for the Music Education/Teacher education files that he maintains.
HOLD THE DATE - President & Provost visiting SoM
On Thursday, November 5 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in Bird Hall, President Ramsey and Provost Willihnganz have requested a special meeting with faculty to present The 2020 Plan. We know there will be some course and lesson conflicts, but to the degree you are able to adjust schedules, your presence will be appreciated. Both full-time and part-time faculty are strongly encouraged to attend. Please brief yourself by visiting http://louisville.edu/president/2020plan/
Faculty-Staff Phone Directory
Everyone should have found in their mailbox a form requesting review and updating of your entry in the faculty/staff phone directory. If you haven't done so, please turn yours in no later than next Tuesday, September 1 so the directory can be printed and distributed soon.
Avoid Phones Ringing in Classrooms
All our classrooms should now be equipped with telephones. To avoid having erroneous phone calls disrupt class but still allow RAVE alerts from Public Safety to be broadcast, you may: without lifting the handset, press the New Call button - tap on the volume button, lowering the ringer as far as it will go - then Save - then End Call. Even though classroom phones are not equipped with a feature to turn the ringer completely off, this simple step will make incoming calls virtually inaudible, at least not disruptive.
Resources Page
No doubt 99% of you have already found it. But if you're in the other 1%, the faculty and staff resources page is now very easy to find, and used regularly to post reference material, forms, and information you may need. Start at the SoM homepage: http://louisville.edu/music/ or music.louisville.edu > Faculty & Staff tab > Faculty & Staff Resources. A new feature there is the posting of all E-Weekly newsletters.
Request from Staff
Since Shaunitra Wisdom has been on leave, you've seen various staff members taking turns at the reception desk (aka the hot seat!), and one common theme has emerged above all others. We are too often uninformed about things we need to know in order to carry out our collective goal of providing good customer service. We know that faculty members expect this of us and we all want to surpass that expectation. Some examples: “When and where are ensemble auditions?” “What room is the 4:00 Grawemeyer meeting being held in?" “How can I get a copy of my ensemble audition music?” "Where’s my division meeting? The room listed here is empty.” “Where are auditions for ABC or XYZ this afternoon?” It's frustrating when we can’t respond to questions with good information, meaning that customers often end phone calls or leave frustrated as well. Perhaps we'll find a web-based way to post and share information more widely than we can now, but til then, a quick email to any of us about such plans and activities would go a long way. Thanks for your awareness and understanding. (PS - Nitra returns on September 14th!)

Guess how much it costs...
...for one sheet of standard SoM letterhead stationery? for one standard SoM envelope? See below. The price for a 1-ounce first-class stamp is now 44¢, so as the cost of doing business keeps going up, please try to make prudent use of our costly resources.
E-Weekly is issued every Friday to faculty and staff in the School of Music and Music Library. News or other items for inclusion are welcome any time up through the end of business on Thursdays.

1 sheet of letterhead = 10¢; 1 envelope = 15¢ .... every letter we send now costs 69¢!
