Faculty Favorite Awards
Each year, the Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning asks UofL students to nominate faculty, staff, and graduate teaching assistants who make a significant difference in their learning and intellectual growth. Nominees exemplify the true spirit of teaching and learning through the eyes of their students. One of the "Top 11" Faculty Favorites for 2010-11 is Bomi Lee, then a GTA, now a part-time Lecturer. To see the comments made about all nominees by school, go to http://louisville.edu/delphi/faculty-favorites. Congratulations to Bomi and other SoM faculty praised by students last year!

PERSONNEL UPDATE
Carolyn Nichols has announced her resignation from UofL effective September 30. As the school's longest-serving technology staff member (seven years), Carolyn has done important work on behalf of the school in helping staff and faculty manage the expanding technology resources of the school and university. Consequently, her resignation will be keenly felt. We wish her much success in her budding internet business (http://www.etsy.com/shop/antiqued http://www.etsy.com/shop/Ephemeratta). The vacancy will be posted in Career Opportunities as soon as possible and top candidates will be interviewed by the Dean and members of the Technology Committee. Nonetheless, there will be a gap in time between Carolyn's departure and the arrival of her successor, suggesting two important directions. First, make good use of her three remaining weeks with us, and second, be observant and responsive to email directives and instructions with regard to the migration of GroupWise to Outlook. This changeover has already started to take place and will continue through much of November. Carolyn will be as helpful as she can be in facilitating the migration, but much of this will take place after her departure. Everyone is invited to a farewell reception for Carolyn on September 30 from 3-4:30 in the Green Room.

1. Faculty are reminded that the September 15 meeting will be devoted to discussion / proposals dealing with the general core of music requirements that are a part of our undergraduate degree programs. Proposals will be brought to the floor from the Undergraduate Studies Committee or, if made from the floor at the meeting, will be referred to the Committee. The critical action required in advance of this meeting is the creation of written proposals pertaining to the content of the core and the forwarding of these to the Committee.
2. Many music students (176) will be involved in the outreach project to Paducah and Celebration of the Arts event at the Carson Center on Monday, September 26. Students from the university orchestra, choirs, wind ensemble and jazz in the schools combo will be out much of that day doing outreach and recruiting in regional schools. This project was announced at our opening faculty meeting and appears on our list of important dates, but it bears mention once again. There's a free public performance of this concert at 7:30pm on Sunday, September 25 in Comstock.
The 2011-2012 list of arts events which registered SoM students may attend at no cost is finally ready and attached. PLEASE explain to your students that the list currently includes 22 distinct live music, opera, and ballet events throughout the year that they may attend for free....not just one of 22....they may attend all of them! This arrangement with our colleague arts organizations is a direct benefit of the $175 per semester music fee paid by every music major. Attendance hasn't been as robust as it could be, and faculty awareness of this unique perq and encouragement can make a big difference this year! It's posted on our student resources page and will updated as opportunities arise: http://louisville.edu/music/current-students/student-resources.html
