Faculty support letters for students’ summer grant applications
… should be addressed “To whom it may concern” and delivered or emailed to Debbie Hawley by the absolute deadline of Monday, February 21 at 4pm. We’ve done our best to stress to students to request letters well in advance, and appreciate your support of their applications.
Pat Rafferty will be performing the Barber Violin Concerto with combined members of the LO and National Symphony Orchestra on the Keep Louisville Symphonic concert this evening at 5:30 at the Marriott Ballroom downtown.
Audit Services will perform a routine audit of data encryption beginning February 21. The objectives are: 1) to assess the level of compliance with University policies regarding the encryption of servers, laptops, desktops, removable media, and peripheral devices in departments and units that process and store sensitive information. 2) to evaluate the adequacy of University data encryption standards and guidelines and the effectiveness of the enforcement of existing policies. The scope of the audit will include, but not be limited to, interviews with faculty and staff, and the review and assessment of the use of encryption in selected business units and departments, as well as other items or issues identified during the course of the audit. Selected departments and units will be reviewed for compliance with University policies regarding encryption of devices that process or store sensitive data. Please inform department heads and administrators that we may be scheduling a review in their respective areas. - Barry V. Scott, Senior Information Systems Auditor

@louisville.edu
As previously announced, faculty and staff will switch to Microsoft Exchange email this fall. To ensure continuity of email delivery during the transition, please use @louisville.edu instead of @gwise.louisville.edu when sharing your email address on business cards, curriculum vitae, the web, etc. For example, jane.doe@gwise.louisville.edu becomes jane.doe@louisville.edu. Email addressed to the @louisville.edu domain will continue to be delivered to your GroupWise email account now and to your Microsoft Exchange email account after the migration.
IT no longer accepting requests for Restoring Email and Voice Mail
Information Technology spends about 1,000 hours annually restoring email and voice mail for university community members. Due to increased demand on our resources, we will be unable to continue accepting these requests. This will allow us to reinvest the time and effort into strategic technology initiatives. As of February 16, IT is no longer accepting requests for restoring email and voice mail. Thank you for your support as we work to build a stronger technology foundation at UofL.

UPDATE--Student Evaluations of Teaching, Fall 2010
Now that all faculty have had a chance to review the reports of online evaluations submitted by students last fall, we have heard from a few of you that some seem to be missing, or that somehow the entirety of what you have viewed just doesn't look complete. Please report any specific problems or issues you have with your evaluation reports to me. I'll compile a list of issues to begin addressing with the office of Institutional Research. Our goal is to resolve any current problems with the eXplorance system prior to the collection of Spring online course evaluations, so your feedback is greatly appreciated. Take a look at eXplorance, providing colleges and universities with enterprise-class software for the automation of course evaluations and surveys. www.explorance.com -DBH
BUILDING UPDATES
-HVAC work continues through mid-February. Systems are currently being balanced/calibrated and temperatures should stabilize in the coming weeks. Ceiling tiles will be returned as work is completed in each area. Thank you for your patience during this transition.
-Master key is still missing. New locks/keys have been ordered with Klein, and are expected to be installed when order is received (no time estimation has been given). To make this transition smoother, the University Locksmith will cut new keys 'before' the key cores are changed. New keys will be issued as soon as they are received. Once your lock has been changed, you will already have the new key, and will need to return the old key to me. More information will be provided as it is received.
-Security camera project to hopefully be completed this month. - Angela Keene
Faculty Absence Report

This online form was developed and posted a few years ago, and it's probably time for a reminder. For absences from campus of more than one day, faculty are expected to submit this form, posted under Faculty Documents on the Faculty & Staff Resources page, at least three working days prior to your anticipated absence. It's automatically sent to Debbie Hawley with a copy to your Division Head. Thank you all!

2011 Summer Music Grants
Music majors may apply for summer music grants now. Recall that each application must include at least one faculty recommendation letter, so be expecting requests. The firm deadline is 4pm on Feb. 21. Two levels of review will occur: first by the Deans and Division Heads, and then by the Student Advisory Council, the group that makes funding recommendations to the dean.
Ashley Miller (Freshman, Music Therapy/Jazz major) will be a featured soloist with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra this Saturday evening. Ashley will be playing Escapades by John Williams. It is the theme song from the movie Catch Me If You Can. It is quite a challenging piece which she has memorized for the performance. Ashley won the Betty F. Brown Award for Instrumental Excellence in Columbus, IN, an annual scholarship competition for Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in Columbus. The Seniors are in a separate class from the Sophomores and Juniors and compete for scholarship money as opposed to money for lessons and music camps. There are three monetary awards given in the senior division. The top winner also gets the chance to audition to perform a solo with the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra the next year. Ashley won the top prize and received $3,000 as well as the opportunity to audition for a solo with the Philharmonic. She auditioned for David Bowden, Music Director and Conductor of the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic Orchestra and passed. She sounds outstanding on the piece! -Mike Tracy

Please support the Music Therapy (MTOUL) Valentine's Fundraiser!!!
MTOUL is sponsoring a Valentine's fundraiser. They are selling little Valentine's candy gifts that will be delivered during major ensemble rehearsals between February 8 and February 14 and to various offices. (Thanks to those of you who will allow them to deliver them during the ensembles - they plan to do it before rehearsal begins so as not to disrupt the rehearsal and should be contacting you in advance to be sure that this is OK.) The fundraiser is to raise money for the workshop by Carolyn Kenny on March 4. MTOUL has made a commitment to pay her - PLEASE help them raise the money to do this!Although they sold these from the lobby this week, at this point the only way to buy one is from an MTOUL member - preferably Laurel Yoder (laurel.yoder@louisville.edu) - or from Barbara Wheeler. They are $1 each or 5 for $4 (buy 4, get 1 free!). MTOUL will really appreciate your support as they work to meet their commitment to pay our guest. Thank you!! - Barbara Wheeler
