Vernon Cherrix
Applied Music Studies, Piano & Pedagogy Community Music Program (CMP), Director
Vernon Cherrix graduated from The Peabody
Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree. Graduate studies
culminated with a Master of Arts degree from Regent University, a
Master of Church Music degree, a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, and a
Performer's Certificate from the School of Church Music of the Southern
Baptist Theological Seminary, with additional doctoral study at the
Cleveland Institute of Music. He is certified by the State of Virginia
in choral music, K-12 and by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association as
a Master Teacher of piano. The Russian/American Association awarded a
certificate for outstanding teaching to Dr. Cherrix following his
students performance in Carnegie Hall. His pupils have been chosen to
perform on "From the Top," Public Radio's International showcase for
America's best young classical musicians. Most recently, Dr. Cherrix
was awarded "Teacher of the Year 2007" by the Kentucky Teachers
Association.
Dr. Cherrix has taught at the Peabody Conservatory, the Cleveland Institute of Music and was a Visiting Professor of Piano at the College of Chinese Culture in Taiwan and Payap University in Thailand. His pupils have won local, state, and international competitions.
Performances and master classes have been given in Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Canada, and the United States. Last season, he and his wife, Nancy, were heard in piano four-hand recitals in Indiana, Kentucky, Texas and Virginia. He is an active member of the Greater Louisville Music Teachers Association, the Kentucky Music Teachers Association, and the Music Teachers National Association.
