Chien-Ju Liao

Applied Music Studies, Viola

Chien-Ju LiaoChien-Ju Liao, a native of Taiwan, holds the B.F.A. in viola performance at the National Taiwan Normal University, the M.M. in Music Education, and the D.M.A. in viola and chamber music performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.  In 2002, the prize winner of Geraldine B. Gee International Viola Competition, Liao studied with Masao Kawasaki and Catharine Carroll at the University of Cincinnati and the Aspen Music Festival and School.  In 2003, Liao was awarded the viola mentor fellowship of the Aspen Music Festival and School and has been mentor of the Aspen Sinfonia Orchestra and the Aspen Concert Orchestra.  She was also an assistant to Masao Kawasaki and Catharine Carroll.

An active musician, Liao has performed in numerous solo recitals and master classes in the U.S. and Taiwan.  As a chamber musician, Liao has appeared on Cincinnati Chamber Circle, Aspen Spotlight Concert, and Worthington Chamber Series.  Liao is also the coordinator of the CCM Viola Ensemble.  As an orchestral musician, Liao has performed with orchestras such as Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Kentucky Symphony Orchestra, Aspen Chamber Orchestra, Aspen Festival Orchestra, and Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra.  She is currently a member of the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra.

Liao is the viola instructor at the University of Louisville.  She is also a member of the faculties of the University of Cincinnati.
