The University of Louisville Trombone Ensemble has a long-standing tradition at the school of music. The ensemble was previously directed by trombone professors Ernest Lyons and Richard Cryder. Trombone professor Brett Shuster assumed the position as director in 2000. The ensemble ranges from eight to sixteen trombonists. Works performed include music from the 16th century through the 21st century. The trombone ensemble has recently been joined by Scott Hartman, John Fedchock, Susan K. Smith, Will Kimball as soloists.
The UofL Trombone Ensemble has performed annually at University of Louisville Comstock Recital Hall and tours frequently. In 1996, the trombone ensemble performed at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference to extraordinary reviews. The ensemble has premiered original compositions in addition to transcriptions and arrangements by students and faculty.
