Concerts
During the 2007 fall semester, several concerts and lectures were sponsored by the Music History division:
September 13 (4:00 pm, Bird Hall): Lecture/Demonstration by Dr. Chan E. Park on the subject of the Korean traditional story-telling singing tradition, p'ansori. Co-sponsored by the Korea Society. Admission is free.
October 13 (3:00 pm, Comstock Hall): Concert of Indian Classical Music. Kartik Seshadri Ensemble. Sitar Virtuoso Kartik Seshadri is internationally acclaimed as one of India's outstanding musicians and the foremost disciple of Pandit Ravi Shankar. He will be accompanied by accomplished tabla artist Abhijit Banerjee. Admission is free.
Oct 19-20 - BACH CANTATA FESTIVAL: The U of L Music History Division hosts a weekend gathering to celebrate the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in honor of the memory of Gerhard Herz, the founder and a long-time member of the division.
Friday, October 19 - 8:00 p.m. (Bird Hall): Dr. Michael Marissen presents a lecture on Bach cantatas in historical and liturgical context, “Historically-Informed Approaches to Interpreting Bach’s Cantata Texts and their Musical Settings.” Admission is free.
Saturday, October 20 - 8:00 p.m. (Comstock Hall): U of L Early Music Ensemble will be joined by guest performers Julianne Baird, soprano, Washington McClain, Baroque oboe, Gesa Kordes, Baroque violin, Barry Bauguess, Baroque trumpet, and Steven Plank, Baroque trumpet and organ continuo, to present a program of music from Bach's cantatas, including BWV 199 and BWV 172. Admission is free.
November 3 (8:00 p.m., Comstock Hall): World Music Series: Concert of Persian classical music. Admission is free.
