John Spencer (b.1979)

Skunk: III. Skfunk, Round Dance, Tongues of Fire, and Motion
Having completed his M.M. in Music Composition in May 2005, John Spencer began pursuing a doctorate at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. John is planning for a career in church ministry and collegiate teaching. In addition to writing music for the concert stage, he writes hymns and other music for use in Christian worship. While a graduate student at UofL, John served as a Teaching Assistant for Music Theory, and he currently teaches at UofL as an Adjunct Instructor in Music Theory. (12/05)

Rebecca Doran (b.1979)

Three Geometries for Chamber Orchestra: III. Dodecahedron
Completing her M.M. in Music Theory and Composition at UofL in May 2003, Rebecca Doran is currently pursuing a PhD in Music Theory at The University of Texas at Austin, where she is an Assistant Instructor. Three Geometries was written in Rebecca’s second year of graduate studies, and it was the featured student composition at the November 2003 New Music Festival. (12/05)

Carrie Leigh Page (b.1980)

Missa Brevis: Kyrie
Currently Composer-in-Residence at St. Martin of Tours in Louisville, Carrie Page received her M.M. in Music Composition from UofL in May 2005, where she studied as a Bomhard Fellow in Music Composition. She received her B.M. in Music Education from Converse College in 2002. Kyrie was written in 2001. (12/05)

Jeremy Perry (b.1978)

Two Pieces for Violin and Cello: II. Moderato, grave
Jeremy Perry is in his final year of undergraduate study for his B.M. in Music Composition. Two Pieces was written while Jeremy was a sophomore at UofL. He plans to continue his education and study of music. (12/05)

Leon Harrell (b. 1980)

Meadowlarks and Eight O’Clock
A Bomhard Fellow in Music Composition, Leon Harrell will receive his M.M. in Music Composition from UofL in May 2006. Meadowlarks and Eight O’Clock were written during his first year of graduate study, and both songs use texts taken from Sara Teadale’s Flame and Shadow. Following graduation Leon plans to continue his education in a doctoral program for theory and composition. (12/05)

Amy (Gerber) Doerfler (b.1980)

Kyrie
Recipient of the Bomhard Fellowship in Music Composition, Amy Doerfler received her M.M. in Music Theory and Composition from UofL in May 2005. Kyrie was written during Amy’s first year of graduate study and was premiered as a featured student composition at the New Music Festival in November 2004. Amy plans to pursue her doctorate in composition in the fall of 2006. (12/05)

Michael Schaad (1982–2005)

Hall of Maat
Tragically, Michael Schaad died in an automobile accident in May 2005. He left behind many fine compositions, including numerous works featuring saxophone, his own instrument upon which he was gifted. Hall of Maat was written for the UofL Saxophone Ensemble during Michael’s second year of composition study. Michael’s dry wit and his distrust of fuzzy logic and easy sentimentality belied his deep interest in diverse spiritual matters. The title of this work, Hall of Maat, comes from the Egyptian goddess Maat, who personified truth, justice, and order in the universe, and who served in judgment of the hearts of the deceased. Michael will be missed. (12/05)

Alexander Smith (b.1979)

Five Fictitional Exchanges: III. Off With the Frayed, Unnecessary Ensemble, V. Life Outside, Behind You and Magnificat
Currently a Grawemeyer Fellow in Music Composition at UofL, Alexander Smith will receive his M.M. in Music Composition in the winter of 2005, having received his B.A. from Earlham College in 2002. The works heard on this CD were written early in Alex’s graduate study. (12/05)

Rob Collier (b.1980)

A Long, Long Rope
After receiving his B.A. in Music from Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky, Rob Collier began work on his M.M. in Theory/Composition at UofL. He is the recipient of a Graduate Teaching Assistantship in Theory and will graduate in May 2006. A Long, Long Rope was written during his first year of graduate study. (12/05)

Scott Adams (b.1982)

Opposition: I. Conflict
Having received his B.A. from Asbury College, Scott Adams began work on his M.M. in Composition at UofL. Currently a second year graduate student serving as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Composition, he will graduate in May 2006. Oppositions is a three-movement work written for Jim Dersch, and the first movement, Conflict, was composed during Scott’s first semester as a graduate student. (12/05)

Calvin Falwell (b. 1983)

Velocious and Bamboo
Receiving his B.M. in Clarinet Performance from UofL in 2005, Calvin Falwell is currently a Graduate Assistant in Clarinet Performance at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he is an active performer with a wide range of ensembles. Although not a composition major at UofL, Calvin’s interest and enthusiasm for composition found expression. Velocious was written for Katie Waters, and Bamboo was completed in the new digital facility at UofL. (12/05)

R. Andrew Fowler (b.1984)

Cockroaches and Cher
Currently studying as an exchange student in New Zealand, Andrew Fowler will receive his B.M. in Music Theory and Composition in May 2006. Cockroaches and Cher was written for Ben Sollee during Andrew’s first year of composition study at UofL. Andrew’s program notes for the work read, in total, “Because after the bomb drops, that’ll be all that’s left!” Andrew maintains his sense of humor and an intense interest in languages and linguistics.
