2012 Jazz Fest Adjudicators
MARK BUSELLI – trumpet
Mark Buselli is Director of Jazz Studies at Ball State University and co-director of the Buselli/Wallarab Jazz Orchestra in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Buselli's awards include:
* A 2010-11 BSU College of Fine Arts Dean’s Creative Arts Award.
* A Creative Renewal grant from the Indianapolis Arts Council in 2005.
* Teacher of the year award in 2004 at Butler University.
* A Creative Vision award from NUVO in May of 2007.
* A top ten CD release of 2009 (Dec 09) in JAZZIZ magazine for "An Old Soul."
* A top 100 CD of the decade (Jan 2010) in Downbeat magazine for the BWJO release of "Basically Baker."
Buselli has over forty arrangements published for big bands, brass ensemble, and piano/trumpet. He has nine recordings out as a leader on the Owl Studios and OA2 record labels.
Mark has performed with numerous artists, played for four US presidents and currently serves as Education Director of the Buselli/Wallarab Jazz Orchestra along with the Indianapolis Jazz Festival.

RANDY SALMAN – Saxophone
Randy Salman is Professor of Clarinet and Director of Jazz Studies at DePauw University. He is an active performer with the DePauw University Faculty Woodwind Quintet.
Mr. Salman has worked professionally with the Indianapolis Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, David Baker, Gunther Schuller, Quincy Jones, Tony Bennett, and many others. Salman is a member of the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, and serves as Principal Clarinetist with the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra.
He also teaches at the Indiana University Summer Clarinet Performance Workshop, as well as Jamey Aebersold’s Summer Jazz Workshops. Randy has performed on programs at the International Association for Jazz Education Conference, University of Oklahoma Clarinet Symposium, Indiana University Clarinet Symposium and the International Clarinet Association Clarinetfest.
He has recorded with Clark Terry, Winds of Indiana, Chicago Jazz Orchestra (charter member), Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, and Condition Blue. Professor Salman has also participated in many educational recordings for several music-publishing companies. He regularly writes CD reviews and articles for The Clarinet and Band Director Guide journals. His recording of Brooklyn Bridge by Michael Daugherty is available on iTunes.
KEN SLONE – trumpet
Ken Slone attended Indiana University-Studied Jazz with David Baker and Trumpet with William Adam. In addition, he studied and played with Jamey Aebersold. He was a on the faculty of the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshops for fifteen plus years.
Ken lived and freelanced in New York City for more than twenty years playing Latin gigs, club dates, off-Broadway shows, jazz gigs, big band gigs, hotel, cruise ship and various road gigs. While in New York, he studied with Woody Shaw, Steve Grossman and Hal Galper.
Ken is the author of The Charlie Parker Omnibook, 28 Jazz Trumpet Solos Vols. I & II, Clifford Brown Solos and a soon to be published Volume II of Clifford Brown solos.
