Undergraduate FAQ

student orchestraWhat are the advising requirements for School of Music students?

All School of Music students are advised by the Academic Counselor who assists with registration, monitors progress in courses required for their major, and reviews progress made toward completion of Upper Division course prerequisites.

Advising is required for all music students until they have completed all prerequisites for Upper Division courses.  (Upper Division Assessment information can be found in the unit section of the undergraduate catalog as well as in each degree plan in the degree section of the catalog. )  Students will be blocked from registration for classes until the advising requirement has been satisfied.  Registration periods can be found online at the Registrar’s Office website at:  http://louisville.edu/student/services/registrar/reginfo.html

When can I register?

Registration dates for Fall, Spring, and Summer registration can be found online at the Registrar’s Office website at: http://www.louisville.edu/registrar/
Registration dates are on a priority basis according to the number of course hours completed at the time of registration.

Why can’t I register?

Students will be blocked from registering for classes until the advising requirement has been satisfied. Students who owe money to the university in the form of tuition, housing, or parking fines may not be allowed to register until arrangements have been made with the Bursar or Parking Office.

How do I get into a closed class?

Should a class be closed on the registration system, you can either select the ‘wait list’ option, or keep trying to register for it because a space may open in the course before classes begin. The online schedule of classes is continually updated as students drop and add courses from their schedule. In the event you still do not get into the class, you may petition the college in which the course is taught. Professors in the School of Music can give you permission to enroll into their closed classes. Complete the ‘Drop/Add and Grade Type Change Form’ and return it to Beth Loree, located in the Dean’s Office, Room 118.  The ‘Drop/Add and Grade Type Change Form’ is available in the Dean’s Office (115) or it can be found online at the Registrar’s Office website at http://www.louisville.edu/registrar/

How do I get into a class with a time conflict?

You may petition the college in which the course is taught.

How do I drop or withdraw from a course?

Students may drop courses through ULink. After the first week of classes, students will receive the notation of “W” (withdrawal) on their transcripts. The “W” grade is not calculated in the GPA.  The deadline to withdraw from a course can be found online at the Registrar’s Office website at: http://www.louisville.edu/registrar/

How do I get a late withdrawal from a course?

After the last day to add or withdraw, you must petition the college in which the course is taught. The School of Music petition form (Request for Waiver of Deadline to Add Drop a Class) is available in the Dean’s Office (115) or online at the School of Music Student Resources page at: http://louisville.edu/music/current-students/student-resources.html

When should I apply for my degree?

Candidates must apply for graduation at the beginning of the semester in which they expect to complete all degree requirements. The procedure can be found online at the Registrar’s Office website at: http://louisville.edu/registrar/commencement-information.html

Should I have a preliminary degree check?

The Dean’s Office will conduct a degree audit after the Registrar provides the unit with the list of degree candidates. Students are strongly urged to request a preliminary degree audit prior to their final semester so that any deficiencies in degree requirements can be identified early.
