The University of Louisville School of Music is proud to host one of the longest running Suzuki institutes in the United States. Now in its 31st year, the week-long summer workshop has a rich history of providing training for Suzuki teachers and families, many of whom return year after year, developing deep friendships in the process. The Institute is founded on the teaching ideals of the late Dr. Haruko Kataoka, world-wide authority on Suzuki Method, founder of Piano Basics, and our master teacher each summer for nearly two decades.

Mission Statement

The Institute shall provide a week of research for teachers, parents, and students to come together in order to strengthen the quality of Suzuki piano education.

    Student Recitals

All students will perform on a formal evening recital in our wonderful concert facility, Margaret Comstock Concert Hall.  Each recital will be will be followed by a reception.   Formal concert attire includes dresses for girls and shirt and tie for boys, preferably a jacket or suit.  No casual clothes or shoes are permitted.  The home teacher will set the bench and footrest for the recital.

    Pre-Twinkle Course

Children ages 3-6 with no previous instruction may enroll in the Pre-Twinkle course. Students and their parents will have an introductory piano class with Mr. Bruce Anderson each day, plus a daily enrichment class.

    Parent Supervision

Children under age 13 must be accompanied by their parent or a responsible adult throughout the week.  Parents attend the piano class, set the bench and footrest, take notes, and so on.  Parent observation of enrichment classes is welcome and, in some cases, required.  All children must be supervised and accounted for between classes.  This is for their safety as well as out of respect for other students and groups sharing the facility.
