Miró Quartet

Winning First Prize at the Banff Quartet Competition and the Naumburg Chamber Music Award, the Miró Quartet has captivated audiences with its youthful intensity and mature interpretations. Formed in the fall of 1995, the Quartet enjoys an active touring schedule, and has been heard on numerous broadcasts including NPR's "Perofrmance Today" and Minnesota Public Radio's "Saint Paul Sunday." The Washington Post has said "There is almost nothing one would want from a string quartet the the Miró cannot do: clarity, articulation, balance, and an appealing tonal palette are all acounted for." The Pittsburgh Post-Gazettte stated "Young in years and experience, they have no business playing with such emotional depth and passion..."

Their program here will included the Prokofiev Second Quartet, and Schubert's "Quartet in G Major."

Musica Antiqua Koln with Reinhard Goebel
Musica Antiqua Köln with Reinhard Goebel*
www.aaronconcert.com/artists/koln.html

For 30 years now, Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel have been associated with nearly every important music center and festival at which early music is performed. The ensemble is renowned for its lively interpretations of 17th and 18th-century works and for its virtuoso and imaginative historical performance practice. It is highly equally prominent for its innovative role in discovery and realization of unusual early music repertoire, as is apparent from its numerous awards including a Grammy nomination. According to The New York Times, "Mr. Goebel and his crack instrumental colleagues infuse the music with a fierce vitality to match their virtuosity." In San Francisco, The Examiner called them "one of the hottest acts in the business." The Chicago Tribune said "May they pay us another such inspired visit and soon."

* This concert ispresented with posthumous funding from Dr. Gerhard Herz, a Society founder and renowned music historian.

Takács Quartet

The Takács Quartet is recognized as one of the world's great string quartets. The ensemble's recordings have been nominated for Grammys in 1999 and 2000, and its Bartok Quartet Cycle was awarded Gramophone's "Chamber Music Recording of the Year" for 1998. They recently received the 2003 Grammy Award for Chamber Music, given to the most recent volume of their Beethoven Quartet Cycle recordings. The Quartet is based in Boulder, Colorado, and is a Resident Quartet at the Aspen Festival. The Chicago Tribune has said "What chamber music enthusiast wouldn't be swept away by hearing three examples of the best string quartet literature ... played in one program by four of the best string alchemists on the planet, in well-articulated ensemble?"

Their program will include works by Kodaly, Bartok, and Beethoven's String Quartet Op. 132.

Eroica Trio
Recipient of the 1991 Naumburg Chamber Music Award
Eroica Trio
www.eroicatrio.com

Speaking of the Eroica Trio's Naumburg Award, the Los Angeles Times reported that the ensemble had "turned in dazzling justification of the prize." The three women who comprise the Trio are noted for fiery and virtuosic artistry. Their Naumburg Award was quickly followed by a Lincoln Center debut, and their summer appearances have included the Ravinia Festival in Chicago, and the Mostly Mozrt Festival in New York. The group was founded in 1986 while its members were attending the Juilliard School, and quickly captured national attention for energetic and masterful performances. The New York Times has stated that "They play chamber music made for the concert hall, not for the living room. There is, in other words, an edge-of-the-seat intensity to every note they produce."

Pacifica Quartet with Pianist Ursula Oppens
Recipient of the 1998 Naumburg Chamber Music Award
Pacifica Quartet with pianist Ursula Oppens
www.pacificaquartet.com

A very special concert with the first performance of the revised piano quintet "Tableaux Funebres" by Claude Baker, commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Louisville for its 50th anniversary in 1988. The five players will also perform Schumann's Piano Quintet, Op. 44. One of today's most dynamic and exciting string quartets combines with a renowned pianist who is equally at home as a champion of new music or a sensitive interpreter of traditional fare. The Pacificia Quartet continues to win the hearts of audiences with its impassioned interpretations. They return after an acclaimed Louisville debut for the Society in 2001. Oppens has been described as a compelling musician with probing intellect and curiosity who clarifies what see perceives. The Boston Globe states that she performs "with a superb rhythmic spine and more colors than a giant box of Crayolas."
