 the founding of the Society

The Gerhard Herz Memorial Season
This special season is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Gerhard Herz (1911-2000), renowned musicologist and Bach scholar, dedicated and charismatic teacher, passionate champion of chamber music, a Society founder, six decades as a Board member, and posthumous donor to the quality of these concerts - indeed the "heart" of the Society. In his memory, this season presents several of his favorite ensembles, and one of his favorite musical genres, the lieder recital.

Close Encounters of the Music-Making Kind!
All performances are at 3 p.m. in the acoustically-superb north recital hall of the University of Louisville School of Music, recently named the Comstock Concert Hall.  Pre-concert talks by musical authorities are free at 2 p.m. before each performance in the Bird Recital Hall. Program notes are available on-line in advance of each concert.

Substantial savings for season subscribers!
Single concert ticket cost is $25. Season subscriptions are $75 for all five concerts. You save $50 when you subscribe! (Season subscription for students is still only $15.)

 Emerson String Quartet

Emerson String Quartet
Acclaimed for its insightful performances, brilliant artistry and technical mastery, the Emerson String Quartet is one of the world's foremost ensembles.
Currently celebrating its 25th anniversary, they have amassed an impressive list of achievements including six Grammy Awards - an unprecedented two for Best Classical Album - and complete cycles of the Bartok, Beethoven and Shostakovich string quartets.
Gramophone magazine has said "The Emerson give us playing of exceptional technical accomplishment and an unusually wide expressive range. They continually offer new insights into some endlessly enthralling music."
Their program will include performances from award-winning recordings of the Bartok Third and Shostakovich Eighth String Quartets. And from their recent New York immersion into the quartet music of Haydn, an unusual opportunity to hear "The Seven Last Words."

Kurt Ollmann & Jeffry Peterson

 Juilliard String Quartet

Julliard String Quartet
Returning for their 40th year of performances in Louisville will be our old friends "The Juilliard." They have appeared here since 1954 - 33 times on an annual basis - and during this time performed 86 different works for the Society. An extraordinary relationship with our community which continues in this season dedicated to the memory of their special friend Gerhard Herz.

For over 50 years they have been recognized as a leader in their field, and their performances are celebrated for clarity of structure, beauty of sound, plasticity of line, compelling rhythmic drive, and unanimity of purpose. The New York Times recently said "a composer could hardly have wanted a more polished or electrifying performance."

Their program will present Mozart's Quartet, K. 548 "The Hunt," Quartet No. 4 by American composer Gunther Schuller, recently written for the group, and Beethoven's Quartet in C-Major, Op. 59, No. 3.
