A Trumpeter and his Dad

A success story for the disabled and bands has unfolded over the past year. The story involves a trumpeter and his dad in the University of Louisville Marching Band. The student is blind and has a rare disorder which will not allow him to stretch his limbs. He is confined to a wheelchair and his dad is his partner for life.

The story started so innocently. He wanted to be a part of the game day atmosphere at his university. He became a member of the marching band. His dad, Mr. Hughes, attended all the rehearsals and learned the drill along with his son, Patrick Hughes. This team caught the eye of the local media and national media.

Patrick and his dad have been featured in Sports Illustrated, National Public Radio, ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, College Sports Television, Fox Sports, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, Oprah and is the recipient of the Disney’s Wide World of Sports Spirit Award. Patrick is the first non-athlete to receive this award. In 2006, Patrick and his dad were included in ABC’s People of the Year.

On the morning of November 7th, 2007, the Hughes family received a knock on their door from the crew of ABC’s Extreme Makeover - Home Edition. The family learned that they are going to receive a new home makeover. Details of when this show will be aired will be posted as soon as that information is available. http://eliteextremedream.com

Mr. Hughes, Patrick’s Dad, will be the first recipient of the Band Parent’s Award, named in his honor, by Music for All, Inc. at the Bands of America National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana on November 16th, 2007. http://www.musicforall.org

Patrick is also a member of the University of Louisville Trumpet Studio. Patrick studies privately with Dr. Michael Tunnel, Trumpet Professor at the University of Louisville.

You can learn more about Patrick on his web site at www.patrickhenryhughes.com You can also see the ABC interview by going to the Extreme Makeover Home Edition web site and searching for Patrick Hughes. The ESPN/Disney Award Presentation can be found on youtube. The video is so large you will need to view two separate videos.

Members

Members of the Marching Band represent all majors on campus and all levels of ability. Many incoming students believe that you must be a music major to be in the band. Although we encourage music majors to join, the majority of students in the organization are not music majors and are enrolled in various degree programs throughout the University. All students receive one academic credit for Marching Band. The U of L Marching Band also welcomes students enrolled in the Metroversity program.

CID Program

What is a "CID?" (pronounced KID)

CID is short for CARDS IN DEVELOPMENT. Each new student that joins the marching band is designated as a CID. This title is lifted at the end of the new member's first year, upon completion of their first performance at the Kentucky Derby.CID CAMP is designed for a CID to learn the marching style, music and traditions of the University of Louisville Marching Band without the presence of veteran members. This provides the entering class an opportunity to learn and bond without being overwhelmed in a new environment. When the new members arrive, each CID is paired with a returning member. The selected returning member will become the CID's Parent. The two become partners for the week and also become lifelong friends.
