16th Annual African American Music Heritage Institute Of Ebony Embers-Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance Monday, February 20, 2012
The University of Louisville School of Music will sponsor the sixteenth annual African American Music Heritage Institute (AAMHI) on February 20, 2012 on the Belknap campus of the University of Louisville. This celebration of the history of the music of African Americans will feature concerts, clinics, lectures, and workshops for Kentuckiana elementary and secondary school students, University of Louisville students, and the general public. This year’s theme is Of Ebony Embers-Vignettes of the Harlem Renaissance.
The program celebrates the music and poetry of the Harlem Renaissance era in New York City. As presented by the CORE Ensemble, Of Ebony Embers, examines the lives of three outstanding but very different African American poets - Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen and Claude McKay - as seen through the eyes of the great painter and muralist Aaron Douglas. It is set to music by African American composers ranging from jazz greats Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus to concert music composers Jeffrey Mumford and George Walker.
Since its founding in 1993, The Core Ensemble (www.coreensemble.com) has been acclaimed for the development of a new genre of chamber music theatre works, as well as a long history of commissioning and performing contemporary chamber music. The group maintains a deep commitment to reaching the widest possible range of audiences demographically and geographically, in formats ranging from formal performance to informal lecture and educational residency programs.
On Monday evening, February 20th, there will be a performance by the CORE Ensemble at 8:00 pm in the Comstock Concert Hall at the School of Music. General admission to the performance will be $5.00. U of L students will be admitted free with their valid student ID. Tickets may be reserved by calling (502) 852-6907, or they may purchased at the door.
Other Institute events include a workshop presentation for area students and their instructors at 10:00 am, Monday, in the Comstock Concert Hall of the U of L School of Music. There will also be an informal Q & A session with the performers at 3:00 PM on Monday in Bird Recital Hall. There is no charge for these Institute events, and the public is invited to attend.
This African American History month event is a part of U of L's celebration of diversity and recognizes the contributions of African-Americans to American culture and history. The African American Music Heritage Institute is being made possible through the generous support of numerous individuals and community and University organizations including Audwin and Rae Helton, the U of L School of Music, the College of Arts & Sciences, The Commission on Diversity and Racial Equality, and the U of L Vice Provost for Diversity and International Affairs.
