Dr. Barbara M. Baker is a Professor of Surgery (Speech-Language Pathology) at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. She was the first female faculty member of the Department of Surgery, which she joined in 1976 and was the first female member appointed in 1999 to the Promotion and Tenure Committee in the School of Medicine. She became chair of the Promotion and Tenure Committee in 2004. She was named an American Speech-Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) site visitor to accredit university programs in 2004.
Dr. Baker is the Director of the Speech Pathology section of the Division of Communicative Disorders. She obtained her B.A. in Speech and Drama from Western Kentucky University, her Master's degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Louisville and her Ph.D. in Speech-Language Pathology from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.
She teaches the following graduate level coursework: Voice Disorders, and Dysphagia. She has directed students in research efforts and master's level theses. Her area of research interest centers around voice disorders, dyspashia, and head and neck cancer.
Dr. Baker's private practice is with University Surgical Associates where for over 32 years she has been actively evaluating and treating patients with voice disorders, laryngectomy, swallowing disorders, stroke, head injury, and head and neck cancer. She has been conducting video-stroboscopic procedures for diagnosis of vocal cord pathology, fitting patients with voice prostheses following surgical removal of the larynx, and performing modified barium swallow procedures for dysphagia in radiology since 1980. Outside the realm of speech-language pathology, Dr. Baker enjoys gourmet cooking, extensive travel, playing golf and bridge.
