Federal regulations and policies require that each institution using animals for research, education, and/or teaching establish an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). In general, the IACUC is an advisory committee to the Institutional Official (IO), which at UofL is the Vice President for Health Affairs, and is assigned the oversight for all animal care and use. The UofL IACUC assumes responsibility for those functions given in:
* National Research Council. 1996. Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals (the "Guide"). National Academy Press, Washington, DC. (http://www.nap.edu/readingroom/books/labrats/)
* National Institutes of Health. 1986. Public Health Service (PHS) Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Reprinted March 1996. Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare. (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/olaw/references/phspol.htm)
* Animal Welfare Act (Pub. L. 89-544) and all Animal Care Regulations contained in Title 9, Subchapter A. (http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ac/publications/AWA/AWAINDEX.HTML) and http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ac/publications.html)
This site is designed to provide current information on the charge and operation of the IACUC.
