UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, DEPARTMENT OF RADIOLOGY

RESIDENT SELECTION POLICY

The criteria for resident selection in our program are as follows:

  1. Resident candidates must have graduated from an accredited medical school within the past five years.
  2. Resident candidates must have a significant amount of clinical experience in the United States.
  3. Resident candidates must have completed at least one year of U.S postgraduate clinical training prior to beginning the residency.
  4. International resident candidates must have acceptable visa status (J-1 Clinical Visa/Exchange Visitor Medical Trainee Category); The University of Louisville does not sponsor any other type of visa.
  5. The University of Louisville Department of Radiology uses ERAS electronic service for application to our program.  The Electronic Residency Application System program was developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges to save time and effort by consolidating and streamlining the application process.  Each applicant must complete a common residency application on a computer disk.  The Deans Office of your medical school will load into a secure workstation and along with the student's scanned transcript, Dean's letter and recommendation letters, and USMLE scores, will transmit this information over the internet to each of the residency programs designated by the applicant.  Our residency coordinator will receive the applicant's information, automatically collated, for review and evaluation.  Applications are then printed for review by faculty.  International applicants must apply through the ECFMG and ERAS.  The ECFMG will assume the role of the Dean's offices for the international medical graduates who apply for residency positions. The ECFMG will also transmit a certification status report and USMLE scores for those applicants.
  6. Residents' candidates must submit their documentation (ERAS application, three letters of recommendation including at least one radiology letter, ECFMG status, USMLE transcript, medical school transcript, and personal statement) through ERAS by October 15 for review by the Resident Selection Committee.
  7. Approximately 300 completed applications are received every year for 4-5 resident spots.  The written application is reviewed by two members of the Radiology Resident Selection Committee using an evaluation form (ranges from 1-25) addressing all aspects of the application.  The applicants are ranked based on the application evaluation form and the top 80 applicants are invited to interview.  The applicant is interviewed by three members of the Resident Selection Committee, who each fill out an evaluation form (ranges from 1 - 25) based on the interview.  The Resident Selection Committee then meets and ranks the applicants based on the combined scores of the application and the interview evaluation forms.  This rank list is then submitted to ERAS.
  8. The start date for resident training is July 1 of the year following successful completion of an intern year of clinical training.

Application deadline is October 15 each year. Interviews take place November 17 - 21 and December 15 - 19.  Interviewees will be notified through the ERAS e-mail system.
