Resident Selection Policy

RESIDENT SELECTION POLICY

 

The criteria for resident selection in our program are as follows:

1. Our department adheres to the Resident Selection Policy of the University of Louisville School of Medicine, including:

1. Resident Eligibility

Applicants with one of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment to accredited residency programs at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

a. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).

b. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

c. Graduates of medical schools outside of the United States and Canada who have current valid certificates from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). In addition, as of the 2009-2010 academic year, schools located outside the U.S. and Canada must:

1. Be officially recognized in good standing in the country where they are located

2. Be registered as a medical school, college, or university in the International Medical Education Directory

3. Require that all courses must be completed by physical on-site attendance in the country in which the school is chartered.

4. Possess a basic course of clinical and classroom medical instruction that is

a. not less than 32 months in length; and

b. under the educational institution’s direct authority.

2. Non-US Citizens 

a. Applicants who are not citizens of the United States must possess or be eligible for one of the following:

    • J1 Clinical Visa
    • Valid Employment Authorization Document
    • Valid Permanent Resident Card

b. The following are not accepted for residency or fellowship training:

    • J1 Research Visa
    • J2 Dependent Visa
    • H1B Visa

c. Individual programs may limit the amount of time they will hold a position open for applicants to obtain appropriate immigration status.

2. In addition to the above, candidates must have graduated from an accredited medical school within five years of starting the Radiology residency.

3. Resident candidates must have had a significant amount of clinical experience in the United States.

4. Resident candidates must have completed at least one year of U.S. postgraduate clinical training prior to beginning the residency.

5. The University of Louisville Department of Radiology will only accept applications via ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System). To learn more about ERAS, you may access their Website at www.aamc.org/eras.

6. Our application deadline is October 15 each year. Applications must be complete by October 15 to be considered. A completed application includes: ERAS application, three letters of recommendation (at least one must be a radiology letter), ECFMG status, USMLE transcript, medical school transcript, and personal statement. Interviews take place in November, December and January. Interviewees will be notified through the ERAS e-mail system.

7. The start date for resident training is July 1 of the year following successful completion of an intern year of clinical training.
