Program in Detail

University of Louisville Hospital

The Department of Radiology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, Louisville, Kentucky, offers a four year post-graduate program of education in Radiology. In accordance with the requirements of the American Board of Radiology (ABR), all residents beginning after January 1, 1997 will be required to have completed an approved clinical internship of at least one year prior to entering a Radiology residency.

The four years of residency are spent in the Department of Radiology, completing rotations through the services of University of Louisville Hospital, Veterans Administration Medical Center, Jewish Hospital, and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. A four week post-graduate radiologic pathology course at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology is also required.

Training and experience are provided in all areas of Radiology, including pediatric radiology, neuroradiology, angiography and interventional radiology, OB/GYN ultrasound, and with all imaging modalities, including computed tomography, ultrasound, PET imaging and magnetic resonance imaging. Didactic lectures in Radiology, radiation physics, radiobiology, and nuclear medicine are given during the academic year. Clinical conferences are two thirds didactic and one third case-oriented, and the residents and staff participate in the discussion and demonstration of different diagnostic imaging sub-specialties.

The University of Louisville Department of Radiology does participate in the National Resident Match Program (Advanced Program Track only). This year, we are accepting applications to our program through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) ONLY. We are not accepting paper copies of any part of the process. All completed applications, transcripts, letters of recommendation (3 required at least one from a Radiologist), copies of your National Board of Medical Examiners, Part I, score (required) and Part II (if available) and all of the required documents (excluding the Dean’s Letter) should be sent through your Dean’s Office to the Central Post Office of ERAS. When your application is received in complete form no later than October 15th 2008, it will be reviewed by the Resident Selection Committee and assigned a ranking to be invited for an interview. Should your application be competitive, we will contact you in November for a personal interview.

There are 5 positions available for July 1, 2010. The interviews will be November 17-21 and December 15-19. We receive a large number of applications each year and appreciate the interest in our program. However, we are unable to interview every candidate.

The interview includes a visit to the department and requires at least one full day. During the visit, the applicant will meet with members of the current residency group (lunch will be provided), tour the Radiology facilities at the University of Louisville Medical Center, have individual interviews, attend the daily teaching conference, and tour our integrated facilities.

We appreciate your interest in applying to our residency program.

Sincerely,
Peter C. Hentzen, M.D., Ph.D.
Residency Program Director
