Benefits


HEALTH INSURANCEAt this time, basic (single coverage) health insurance is provided to House Staff Officers at no cost. An alternate plan and/or family coverage may be obtained, but the resident must pay any additional premium. Decisions regarding any and all insurance coverage available to residents should be made at the House Staff Orientation. Flexible Spending Accounts are available should insurance not be desired.

Dental Insurance is also available.

MALPRACTICE INSURANCEMalpractice coverage is provided by the VA and covers a resident while on duty at the Veterans Administration hospital.  Malpractice coverage is also provided by U of L or via private affiliated hospitals under terms of contract with U of L .  However, this coverage does not apply to off-duty activities of employment (moonlighting).
LIFE AND ACCIDENT INSURANCEAt this time each resident receives, free of charge, life insurance for the value of twice the thousand figure of his/her annual salary. Workers compensation, and accidental death and dismemberment insurance are also provided. There is also a supplemental university income benefit to worker's compensation as well
LEAVE ALLOWANCES
/VACATION
Residents in their first through fourth years are entitled to four weeks vacation per year. Vacations must be taken in blocks of one week at a time (Monday through Friday). If a holiday falls in the vacation week, it is counted as vacation also.
EDUCATIONAL LEAVEResidents in their second through fourth years of training in the diagnostic radiology residency program may take up to five days educational leave per year. While any accredited conference, meeting, or refresher course may be selected, it is recommended that at least one annual meeting of the American Roentgen Ray Society or the Radiological Society of North America be attended during the residency.
PERSONAL LEAVEResidents in their first through fourth years of training in the diagnostic radiology residency program may take up to two days of personal leave per year. Residents are provided this leave to conduct personal business which normally cannot be transacted outside regular working hours and for family responsibilities.
SICK LEAVESick leave shall be defined as any medical condition which necessitates an absence from work and shall include medical disability related to pregnancy. Paid sick leave shall be taken from unused vacation and/or personal/educational leave. Any additional leave required must be requested in writing prior to the onset of such leave, whenever possible.  Each request will be handled on a case-by-case basis maintaining uniformity.  Approval of such leave does not guarantee paid leave of absence.  Please refer to the House Staff Policies and Procedures section for further information.
CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION ALLOWANCEEach resident is provided an allowance of $375 per year for expenses related to continuing medical education. This includes medical books, registration fees, expenses related to attendance at professional society meetings, etc. This allowance, or any remaining portion at the end of each year, may be carried forward for use in the next year.
TRAVEL Any resident presenting a paper at an approved national or regional meeting may be eligible to have a portion of his/her travel costs defrayed by the Department.
TUITION REMISSIONEmployees are eligible to take up to six credit hours tuition free each semester.

Dependent children of regular, full-time faculty or staff may take courses toward their first undergraduate degree tuition-free.

Employee tuition remission may be transferred to a spouse.

LAB COATSTwo lab coats are provided for each new resident by the department. Following the first year, an additional lab coat may be charged to the resident's CME account.
LIBRARY FACILITIES The Medical School Library offers the employee photocopies at minimum charge, research librarian assistance, and the full usage of the library.

University Libraries consist of the Ekstrom Library, The Bridwell Art Library, the Anderson Music Library, the Laura Kersey Library of Engineering, Physical Sciences and Technology, the Law Library, the Kornhauser Health Sciences Library, and the University Archives and Records Center. They provide access to and assistance with materials and information within the University Library System and, through interlibrary loan, access to holdings at other institutions across the country and abroad for your leisure. Employees may use the library facilities at U of L as well as libraries at the Kentuckiana Metroversity schools.

MEDICAL SCHOOL BOOKSTOREThe HSC Bookstore offers a 15% discount throughout the year for medical reference books purchased by residents.
UNIVERSITY CREDIT UNIONAll regular status employees are eligible to become members of the Kentucky Telco Federal Credit Union. Savings may be handled though payroll deduction. Loans may be applied for immediately. Call 852-6711.
EYE EXAMINATIONEye examinations can be scheduled by calling the Ophthalmology Clinic at 852-7665. Regular status University faculty and staff (not dependents) can receive a 20% discount on the cost of an eye examination. Present valid I.D. card.
DENTAL CLINICThe University offers a complete dental program through the School of Dentistry. Call 852-5086 for information.
INTRAMURAL AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES Regular status employees may enjoy the University's recreational facilities, such as the Crawford, Humana and Mendelsohn gymnasiums, at designated times. Family members (spouse and/or children) may also use the facilities by obtaining a special University ID card. For more information call 852-6707. Recreational facilities are also available at the Bass/Rudd Tennis Center. For information call 852-1682.

ARTS DISCOUNTS Participating organizations: Actor's Theatre , Derby Dinner Playhouse, Kentucky Center for the Arts, Kentucky Opera, Louisville Bach Society, Louisville Ballet, Louisville Orchestra, PNC Bank Broadway Series , and Stage One.
INTERNET REMOTE PLUS ACCOUNTEmployees may request an internet remote plus account through the University. This configures a home computer to access the internet at a cost of $8.00 per month for 200 hours of connection time.
CAFETERIA DISCOUNTSThe hospital cafeteria offers a 30% discount to employees and the Coffee Shop offers a 25% discount to employees.
PERSONAL PURCHASESThe Department of Purchasing may help employees make personal purchases. Such requests must be limited to major items, such as large appliances, where savings possibility will warrant the time and effort spent on behalf of the employee. Call 852-6247.
In order to receive any of the above listed fringe benefits, each resident must have a University of Louisville identification card which shows the following: (1) identifying photo, (2) school/department, (3) social security number, and (4) date issued. Additional dates and times these cards may be obtained is posted periodically. You may check by calling University Personnel Services at 852-6541.
