Fellowship Program in Sleep Disorders
The fellowship program in sleep disorders was moved from the Pediatric Division to the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Disorders Medicine in February 2009.
The University of Louisville offers a Sleep Medicine Fellowship Program designed for physicians who are interested in developing clinical expertise in the field of Sleep Medicine from a multidisciplinary faculty.
BACKGROUND
The fellowship program in Sleep medicine was originally founded by Dr. David Gozal and has been as ECFMG accredited fellowship since 2006. It was designated an Academic Program of Distinction by the AASM.
A recent change in leadership resulted in transfer of the program to the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Disorders Medicine in the Department of Medicine in February 2009.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Sleep Medicine Program at the University of Louisville School of Medicine is committed to providing the highest quality sleep medicine education to fellows. Our training philosophy focuses on the multidisciplinary aspect of Sleep Medicine and utilizes state of the art facilities and committed mentors.
The fellowship program is under the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Disorders Medicine, and is part of the Internal Medicine Program of the Department of Medicine at the University of Louisville. The Sleep Medicine Faculty includes sleep specialists form Pulmonary, Neurology, and Pediatrics. The program has very close interaction with specialists from ENT, oral maxillofacial surgery, Dental Sleep Medicine and Dental radiology.
The training program is composed of one year intense clinical training in Sleep Medicine, preparing candidates for certification in Sleep Medicine.
One fellowship position is offered each year.
TRAINING FACILITIES:
The University of Louisville teaching hospitals and other affiliated hospital are utilized. These include University of Louisville Hospital and Sleep Center, Kosair Children’s Hospital and Pediatric Sleep Center, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
TEACHING:
Fellows will undergo clinical training in Sleep Medicine in both pediatric and adult populations. There will also be exposure to different disciplines and that are closely associated with Sleep Medicine.
Clinical Rotations:

Core:
- Adult Sleep Center Rotation (includes inpatient consults)
- Pediatrics Sleep Center Rotation (includes inpatient consults)
Elective: Fellows continue to attend their continuity clinics*
- Technical training in sleep procedures.(1 month)
- ENT / OMFS / Dental sleep Medicine (2 weeks)
- Neurology / EEG (1 month)
- Psychiatry/Psychology (2weeks )
- Pediatric pulmonary( 2weeks)
- Adult Pulmonary ( 2 weeks)
- Vacation: Over the course of the year, the fellow will be allowed 4 weeks of vacation interspersed over the course of the year's rotations. The clinic schedule is constant and does not need to be altered if fellow is on vacation.
SALARY AND FRINGE BENEFITS:
Currently, sleep fellow stipends are PGY4-$52,586, PGY5-$55,241 PGY6-$55,571, or PGY7-$59,551 per year (as of 2008-2009). Professional liability insurance and private Humana health insurance benefits are also provided.
