The physicians of the UofL Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Disorders Medicine specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of lung conditions and diseases as well as sleep and wake disorders.

Please welcome three of our newest faculty members starting on September 1st.

Dr. Jesse Roman, Professor/Chair of the Department and Distinguished Research Scholar.  Since 2002, he has been Director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at Emory University. When the Chair candidates were evaluated, Dr. Roman stood out as the top pick by many. Some of his particular strengths were his personable and engaging interactions with colleagues, previous Directorship of a large Division with 50 faculty and 15 fellows, excellent NIH funding track record and ability to find consensus and strengths in various situations.

In particular for our Division, he has extensive experience with the ATS, NHLBI, and many reputable pulmonary journals.

He currently has research funding in the areas of Lung Cancer and the role of the Extracellular Matrix, IPF clinical research center grant, nicotine and asthma, Institutional academic training grant in pulmonary medicine, a VA merit review, among others. He has 85 peer review publications as well.

Dr. Rafael Perez has been appointed Professor of Medicine, Since 1988 he has been an Associate Professor of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine at Emory University.

Dr. Perez has had a long interest in the study and management of interstitial lung diseases, a group of complex lung scarring illnesses for which there is little effective therapy. He is involved in federal and industry-sponsored clinical trials exploring new therapies in pulmonary fibrosis. He is also involved in studies designed to better understand the causes and progression of interstitial lung diseases and how this knowledge is translated to treatment of these diseases.

Dr. ShouWei Han has been appointed Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Disorder Medicine and Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology.  Dr. Han also holds an appointment of Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Hemotology and Oncology at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.

This is a very exciting time for our Division.

A Unique Resource

The UofL pulmonary group is a regional referral site with the expertise and resources to diagnose and treat the most difficult cases. In particular, the group focuses on:

Lung cancer
Pulmonary hypertension
Cystic fibrosis
COPD
Asthma and other airway disorders
Sleep and wake disorders
Interstitial lung disease
State-of-the-art pulmonary function and exercise physiology lab

The UofL pulmonary team also boasts one of the only pulmonary interventionalists in the region, with the expertise to perform non-invasive lung reduction for patients with advanced emphysema. The UofL group also has the most advanced outpatient pulmonary function and exercise physiology lab in the region.

A Team Approach

UofL pulmonologists may serve as consultants to other physicians as well as provide long-term care to patients with chronic conditions.

In addition, team members serve on a variety of multi-disciplinary groups, such as the lung cancer clinic at the Brown Cancer Center, to ensure highest level of patient care.

Care Supported by Research

The physician researchers in the pulmonary division at UofL participate in a number of clinical trials, giving patients early access to new treatments and novel therapies.

The clinical program is also supported by an active laboratory research program focused on acute lung injury, critical care, asthma, interstitial lung disease, sleep disorders and hypoxia.
