Application and Requirements

The educational goal during the PG 1 is to foster confidence and competence in the basic skills required to fulfill the physician's role, especially through experiences in internal medicine and primary care. Further, the psychiatric inpatient rotations focus primarily on basic skills of diagnosis and treatment planning in adult and geriatric patient populations. Some outpatient experience may be offered in order to maintain continuity of patient care.

PGY 1 CURRICULUM

First year residents engage in weekly didactics every Tuesday afternoon from 1:00 until 5:00.   Fundamental skills such as psychiatric interviewing in addition to courses focusing on community psychiatry, cultural issues and the history of psychiatry are covered.  In addition, first year residents begin the Psychopharmacology and Psychopathology Courses.  These two courses continue for two academic years in length while providing a structured approach to understanding disease process and pharmacological intervention.

In addition, first year residents meet with the chairman weekly for a seminar discussing the therapeutic alliance.  They also participate in a weekly case conference with the Director of Psychotherapy Training.   The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation for the development of our residents as they proceed in training.
