Dr. Halappanaver, Resident

Monica Halappanaver, M.D.

It is incredible how fast the time has flown by! Even before I realize it, here I am in the fourth year, nearing completion of residency! Currently, I am doing my elective months studying public health, which allows me to also complete the practicum experience for my MPH.  For my elective, I am working with an organization that is involved in conducting a comprehensive primary care and oral health needs assessment and workforce study for Jefferson County. My job involves reviewing the data, talking to various physicians and obtaining their input and suggestions on improving access to health care. I also get to attend health care and finance committee meetings. This is a much different experience than what I have typically done in residency. The fourth year of residency gives me ample time to read, prepare for boards, and focus on my plans post residency.  I continue to see my long terms two afternoons a week. As a fourth year I feel more knowledgeable and confident when dealing with various psychiatric issues. We have autonomy over decision making with regards to patients’ treatment care plans. I believe this lays the perfect foundation for being an independent psychiatrist when you are done with residency. I am glad that I chose this residency program and had the opportunity to work with the most wonderful group of people! I am excited and look forward to establishing myself as a qualified psychiatrist!
