Message from the Director
We are pleased you are exploring our psychiatry residency training program here at the University of Louisville. Our program capitalizes on the strengths of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, with its emphasis on excellence in education, high quality clinical care, and research. Our Chairman, Allan Tasman, M.D., past president of the American Psychiatric Association, and a former residency training director, has a long history of strong commitment to education and training, and is leading our department toward new and exciting endeavors in clinical services and research.
The training program at the University of Louisville prepares residents for the contemporary practice of psychiatry. Our faculty is dedicated to providing teaching and supervision to our residents. Multiple hospitals and clinic sites are used which give our residents a broad range of clinical experiences and exposure to diverse treatment techniques. An extensive formal didactic curriculum provides the structural framework to gain a deeper understanding of psychiatric practice. Continuity care of patients and individual case supervision by faculty supervisors provide opportunities for residents to strengthen their psychotherapeutic skills and continue their professional development.
Residents maintain an active role in the Department of Psychiatry and in the residency program. They are members of the Residency Education Committee, and along with faculty representatives, provide ongoing evaluation and recommendations for the training program. Residents are actively involved in the recruitment and selection of new residents into our program. The Residents' Association, their established self-governance group, meets weekly and serves as an effective channel for communication and advocacy of issues of concern to residents.
For those of you who know little about our city, I would highly recommend Louisville as a wonderful place to live. Located on the Ohio River, Louisville offers natural beauty, affordable housing, top quality cultural events, great neighborhoods and award winning schools. There is a genuine friendliness with a touch of southern hospitality offered to all.
Joyce A. Spurgeon, M.D.
Director of Residency Education
