Addiction Psychiatry Training Program
The opportunity for advanced, post-graduate study of Addiction Psychiatry is available to residents who have completed general psychiatry residency. The program provides a broad spectrum of sites and treatment experience, enabling addiction residents to become proficient in:
- Substance abuse disorders; their diagnosis and differential diagnosis; symptoms of intoxication, withdrawal, overdose and its management
- The epidemiology and prevention of substance use disorders as influenced by social cultural, genetic, economic and pharmacological factors, including special populations
- Therapeutic modalities commonly used to treat substance use disorders including group, couples, family, insight oriented and cognitive therapies, as well as 12-step facilitation and pharmacotherapy
- Current research interest in addiction psychiatry, and the conceptualization of a research project.

The addiction fellowship offers a variety of clinical opportunities. Sites include inpatient and residential treatment at the Veterans Administration medical Center and Central State Hospital. In addition, fellows gain experience at a 30 day stand alone treatment facility and in outpatient settings. The didactic curriculum includes seminars and conferences including Addictions experts, journal clubs, research practicum, and clinical management of the addict, Grand Rounds, dual diagnosis rounds, and case conferences.
All residents are exposed to a broad range of both inpatient and outpatient treatment settings covering patients in all age groups, including pregnant women, methadone patients, and chronically mentally ill.
