This 450 bed institution, a private, not for profit hospital, is an innovative teaching and patient care facility. This setting provides opportunity for the education of residents in the care of private general medical, surgical, and psychiatric patients. It is located in the Health Sciences Center, one block from the School of Medicine.
There is one inpatient psychiatric service located at Norton Hospital. This unit has its own team of mental health professionals including full time psychiatrists, social workers, nursing and activities personnel. The 6 East unit emphasizes a modern eclectic milieu approach based on general systems theory as it relates to the care of a diverse diagnostic group of adult psychiatric patients. There is a special emphasis on the use of cognitive behavioral therapy as modified to be suitable for inpatient psychiatry. While on rotation on the inpatient services, the resident has an opportunity to participate in ongoing clinical research or to develop research interests of his/her own under faculty supervision. The caseload for residents averages 8 patients.
Norton Hospital serves as an active site for consult experience. The University of Louisville's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences provides 24 hour/day coverage for non-psychiatric service patients in need of psychiatric consultation.
