This 120 bed facility, located 17 miles from the Health Sciences Center, is operated by the Division of Mental Health and Mental Retardation of the Commonwealth of Kentucky as the state inpatient facility serving Louisville and the surrounding seven county area. Central State Hospital provides services to patients needing longer term treatment and specialty care, notably dual diagnosis, geriatrics and forensic psychiatry. The residents rotating at CSH will be assigned to an acute admissions unit where they share the caseload of one of the staff psychiatrists, assigned an average of 6 patients. Each resident will also have supervised experience on the dual diagnosis unit. In addition to learning principles of diagnosis and treatment of acute psychiatric patients, the residents will have an opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary planning with social workers, psychologists, nursing staff, activities therapists, and others. The residents will participate in treatment planning involving linkage with community agencies such as Seven Counties Services.
